Emu Bay Railway
The Emu Bay Railway was a Tasmania, Australian railway company. The railway was significant during full operation, in that it linked the Tasmanian Government Railways system at Burnie with that at Zeehan that further linked to the Mount Lyell railway allowing connection through to Queenstown. It was listed on the Melbourne Stock Exchange. Following the closure of the Tasmanian government line at Zeehan railway station in 1960, until 1965, it operated the Melba Line on the West Coast of Tasmania following the closure of the Zeehan section until 1998. History The origins of the Emu Bay Railway can be traced back to February 1878 when the Van Diemen's Land Company opened a 71 kilometre, horse drawn wooden tramway line from Emu Bay (Burnie) to Rouse's Camp, near Waratah, to serve the Mount Bischoff tin mines. Mount Bischoff
Mount Bischoff is a mountain and former tin mine in the north-western region of Tasmania, Australia. The mountain is situated adjacent to Savage River National Park, near the town of Waratah. Location and features The mountain was named in the early nineteenth century after the chairman of the Van Diemen's Land Company, James Bischoff. Tin was discovered there in 1871 by James "Philosopher" Smith. Tin mine The first operator of the mine was the Mount Bischoff Tin Mining Company, which used a sluice supplied with water from the top of the waterfall in Waratah. In June 1883, the mine installed one of the first hydro-electric generators in Australia, using it to light the offices, workshop and manager's house. EZ Industries
EZ Industries, formerly the Electrolytic Zinc Company, was a zinc miner and refiner in Australia. History EZ Industries was established in 1916 by Amalgamated Zinc as the Electrolytic Zinc Company to operate the Risdon Zinc Works on the banks of the Derwent River in Risdon, Tasmania. It was renamed EZ Industries in February 1957. In 1967, EZ purchased the Emu Bay Railway. In February 1983, EZ opened the Elura Mine near Cobar, New South Wales. Rosebery is a town on the West Coast, Tasmania, west coast of Tasmania, Australia. It is at the northern end of the West Coast Range, in the shadow of Mount Black (Tasmania), Mount Black and adjacent to the Pieman River, now Lake Pieman. Murchison Highway
The Murchison Highway is a highway located in the West Coast, Tasmania, West Coast region of Tasmania, Australia. The highway runs generally north–south, with Somerset, Tasmania, Somerset, near Burnie, as its northern terminus and Zeehan, Tasmania, Zeehan as its southern terminus. The highway was opened on 13 December 1963. Part of the highway from to Burnie was known as the Waratah Highway until 1973. Course The highway is susceptible to ice and snow in winter. Great Western Railway (Tasmania)
The Tasmanian Great Western Railway was a proposed railway that was never built to connect Hobart with the west coast during the 1890s mining boom in Tasmania. It would have passed through a route somewhat similar to the current Lyell Highway through the northern edge of South West Tasmania into the west coast. It was a proposal by business interests to use Hobart on the east coast, rather than the west or north west coast ports.
