Emmental Alps
The Emmental Alps () are a mountain range in the western part of the Alps, in Switzerland. They are located north-west of the Brünig Pass, mainly in the cantons of Lucerne, Bern, and Obwalden, with a small portion in the canton of Nidwalden. The highest summit of the range is the Brienzer Rothorn, which is also the highest point in the canton of Lucerne. The range is named after the Emme valley (German: Emmental). In the north-west corner one finds the relatively low, but widespread, and very furrowed Napf. The Emmental Alps are separated from the Bernese Alps by the Aare valley to the south and connected to the Uri Alps by the four lakes Lungerersee, Sarnersee, Wichelsee, and Vierwaldstättersee to the east. Swisstopo
Swisstopo is the official name for the Swiss Federal Office of Topography, Switzerland's national mapping agency. The current name was made official in 2002. It had been used as the domain name for the homepage of the instituteswisstopo.admin.ch since 1997. Emmental
The Emmental (, ) is a valley in west-central Switzerland, forming part of the canton of Bern. It is a hilly landscape comprising the basins of the rivers Emme and Ilfis. The region is mostly devoted to farming, particularly dairy farming. The principal settlements are the town of Burgdorf and the village of Langnau. Comprising Burgdorf, Trachselwald, and Signau districts in the canton of Bern, the Emmental became part of the Emmental-Oberaargau administrative region on 1 January 2010. The district of Fraubrunnen is divided between Emmental and Bern-Mittelland. Geography The region comprises relatively low mountains on the right bank of the Aare. Widderfeld
The Widderfeld is a mountain in the Emmental Alps, located west of the Pilatus in Central Switzerland. The summit lies on the border between the cantons of Obwalden and Lucerne. Pilatus (mountain)
Pilatus, also often referred to as Mount Pilatus, is a mountain massif overlooking Lucerne in Central Switzerland. It is composed of several peaks, of which the highest () is named ''Tomlishorn''. Geography and transport The whole mountain range stretches at least from the Lopper just opposite from Stansstad to the east as far as at least to the Mittaggüpfi () and the ''Risetestock'' () to the west on the border between LU and OW. Augstmatthorn
The Augstmatthorn is a mountain of the Emmental Alps, overlooking Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland. The largely forested land from the top of the mountain southwards to the lake has been identified by BirdLife International as a 15,900 ha Important Bird Area. Augstmatthorn and its neighbouring peak Suggiture (2085 m) are both within a Federal Wildlife Protection Area as well as a protected moorland area. Fauna The first alpine Alpine ibex, ibex colony in the canton of Bern was settled on the Augstmatthorn at the beginning of the 20th century. The reintroduction was coordinated by the Alpine Game Park Interlaken-Harder, which had its first ibex again in 1913. The reintroduction was so successful that animals were recaptured from the Augstmatthorn to establish new colonies, such as on the Niederhorn. Hohgant
The Hohgant is a mountain of the Emmental Alps, located south of the Emmental in the canton of Bern. The main summit has an elevation of 2,197 metres above sea level and is distinguished by the name ''Furggengütsch''. Several caves (F1 and K2 networks) developing in the Urgonian limestone formation (Aptian) have their entrances on the Hohgant mountain. The F1 cave is connected to the Siebenhengste cave network. Höch Gumme
The Höch Gumme (2,205 m) is a mountain of the Emmental Alps in Switzerland. It lies to the east of the Brienzer Rothorn and Arnihaaggen, and the west of the Wilerhorn and Brünig Pass. Arnihaaggen
The Arnihaaggen (2,216 m) is a mountain of the Emmental Alps in Switzerland. It lies to the east of the Brienzer Rothorn and to the west of the Höch Gumme. The small mountain lake of Eisee lies immediately to the north. Administratively, the summit is located within the municipality of Giswil. Tannhorn
The Tannhorn is a mountain of the Emmental Alps in Switzerland. It lies to the west of the Brienzer Rothorn and to the east of the Augstmatthorn. On its southern side it overlooks Lake Brienz. Vierwaldstättersee
Lake Lucerne (, literally 'Lake of the four forested settlements' (in English usually translated as ''forest cantons''), , ) is a lake in central Switzerland and the fourth largest in the country. Sarnersee
Lake Sarnen (German: ''Sarnersee'') is a lake in the Swiss canton of Obwalden. The lake is on the Sarner Aa, which flows out of the Lake Lungern, through the Lake Sarnen, and into Lake Lucerne.
