Elliston is a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. It lies between the city of Roanoke and the town of Christiansburg in the southwestern part of the state. Barnett House, also known as Big Spring, is a historic home located near Elliston, Montgomery County, Virginia. The house was built about 1808, and underwent a radical transformation in the early 20th century. It is a two-story, five bay brick dwelling with a single pile central passage plan. Elliston-Lafayette, Virginia
Elliston-Lafayette was a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,241 at the 2000 census; in 2010, Elliston and Lafayette were split into separate CDPs. It is part of the Blacksburg– Christiansburg Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Montgomery County, Virginia, including the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg, and the city of Radford. However, many residents of the eastern section of Montgomery County more often travel to Roanoke or Salem for work, shopping, and services since these cities are generally closer and do not require driving up Christiansburg Mountain on U.S. Route 460 (which is a concurrency with U.S. Route 11 here) or Interstate 81. Fotheringay is a historic plantation home located near Elliston, Montgomery County, Virginia. The house was built about 1796, and is a two-story, five bay brick dwelling with a hipped roof and deep two-story rear ell. It features a projecting two-level provincial type portico. The house was originally built as a three bay dwelling with the portico on the southernmost bay. It was expanded to the full five bays in the 1950s. It was the home of Col. George Hancock The home was built by slaves and the bricks were fired on site. Hancock is entombed in a triangular vault on site. He is rumored to be in the upright position looking over his slaves. The next owner, Henry Edmundson (June 14, 1814 – December 16, 1890), was an American lawyer, congressman, farmer, slave owner and Confederate officer.
