Durango, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Durango, is one of the 31 states which make up the Political divisions of Mexico, 32 Federal Entities of Mexico, situated in the northwest portion of the country. With a population of 1,832,650, the 8th lowest of Mexico's states, Durango has Mexico's second-lowest population density, after Baja California Sur. The capital city, Durango, Durango, Victoria de Durango, is named after the first President of Mexico, Guadalupe Victoria. Geography General information The area of Durango is ; this accounts for about 6.3% of the entire territory of Mexico. Durango (, ) is the capital and largest city of the northern List of states of Mexico, Mexican state of Durango and the seat of the Durango Municipality, municipality of Durango. It has a population of 616,068 as of the 2020 census with 688,697 living in the municipality. The city's official name is Victoria de Durango, renamed in honor of the first president of Mexico, Guadalupe Victoria, a native of the state of Durango. The city is at an altitude of in the Valley of Guadiana. Durango was founded on 8 July 1563, by the Spanish explorer Francisco de Ibarra. During the Spanish colonial era the city was the capital of the Nueva Vizcaya, New Spain, Nueva Vizcaya province of New Spain, which consisted mostly of what became the Mexican states of Durango and Chihuahua (state), Chihuahua.
