Dance In The Netherlands
There is great variety in dance in the Netherlands. The traditional dance is the Dutch folk dance; however, this is hardly practiced anymore. Many Dutch practice ballroom dancing, but also tango has a large following. Many young girls start their dancing career with classical ballet and jazz dance. Only a few dances are invented by the Dutch. Most of the Folk Dances are Scottish in origin. The Dutch are inventors of Hakken, which was mainly danced in the Hardcore techno and Gabber scene in the 1990s. jumpstyle, Jumpen, which was invented in Belgium, developed further in the Netherlands. The Netherlands is one of the leading countries in the Brazilian version of zouk (a successor to lambada). Dutch Folk Dance
Dutch folk dance are the traditional dances that were performed by the folk. Foreigners and the Dutch, alike, associate Dutch folk dance with clog dancing, though clogs in practice limit the dance moves. Therefore, the folk dance is mostly danced in shoes. Historically the Dutch danced in shoes as this was part of their Church going clothing. Clogs were used for work only. On harvest feasts the farmers often did dance on clogs though, as the feast followed the harvest, where they had been wearing clogs. In the East of the Netherlands dances like ''Driekusman'', ''Hoksebarger'', ''Veleta'', ''Kruispolka'' and the ''Spaanse Wals'' share the origin with German dances, but some are even danced in countries further away, like Poland and Lithuania. Annabelle Lopez Ochoa
Annabelle Lopez Ochoa (born 30 April 1973) is a Belgian-Colombian international ballet dancer and choreographer based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Dance background Born in Antwerpen to a Colombian father and a Belgian mother, Lopez Ochoa completed her dance training at the , Belgium. She appeared with various German companies before eventually joining Djazzex, a contemporary dance company, in 1993. In 1997, she joined in Rotterdam, where she was a soloist for seven years. Choreographic style Overall, Lopez Ochoa's work relates emotional experience through an abstract but intently connected style of choreography, which occasionally relies on virtuosic technique. Her movement is contemporary, however, she occasionally displays classical virtuosity, such as a soaring grand jeté. Sonia Gaskell
Sonia Gaskell (14 April 1904 – 9 July 1974) was a Lithuanian- Dutch-Jewish dancer, choreographer, dance teacher, ballet and dance director. Life and career Sonia Gaskell was born in Vilkaviškis, Russian Empire (now located in Lithuania), to Russian Jewish parents. She first studied ballet in Kharkov, Ukraine. In 1921, she was sent to Palestine to escape Russian pogroms against the Jews. She relocated to Paris with her first husband in 1925, where she continued her ballet studies with Lyubov Yegorova and Léo Staats, and began dancing in nightclubs and touring cabaret shows during the 1930s. Gaskell danced for the Ballets Russes from 1927–29 and Les Ballets de Paris where she served as director and choreographer until 1939, when she moved to Amsterdam with her Dutch husband. Romy Haag
Romy Haag (born 1 January 1948) is a Dutch dancer, singer, actress and former nightclub manager. In 1999, her autobiography ''Eine Frau und mehr'' was published, in which she describes her life in the art scene in the U.S.A. and Berlin in the 1970s. She has had roles in 26 films, including ''Plastikfieber'', ''The Case of Mr. Spalt'' (''Zum Beispiel Otto Spalt''), '' The Hamburg Syndrome'' and ''Mascara'' with Charlotte Rampling. Margaretha Geertruida MacLeod (, ; 7 August 187615 October 1917), better known by the stage name Mata Hari ( , ; , ), was a Dutch Stripper, exotic dancer and courtesan who was convicted of being a spy for German Empire, Germany during World War I. Marcus van Teijlingen (born 20 March 1973 in Rijnsburg) is a Dutch dance instructor and professional Latin-American dancer. His regular dance partner was Nathalie Kip. He has been working full-time as a dance instructor in Groningen (city), Groningen since 2004. He became known due to his appearance on Dancing with the Stars#The Netherlands, Dancing with the Stars in the Netherlands, reaching the second place, together with Irene van de Laar in the first season. Jaap Flier (27 February 1934 – 18 March 2022) was a Dutch dancer and choreographer. Life and career Flier was born in Scheveningen, Netherlands, and studied with Sonia Gaskell. Benjamin Feliksdal
Benjamin Feliksdal (born 22 January 1940, in Den Helder) is a Dutch ballet dancer. He has danced as soloist and principal dancer with Het Nederlandse Ballet 1960, Het Nationale Ballet 1961/1971, and with the Royal Ballet of Flanders 1972/1973. Professional career Feliksdal began his professional dance-training in 1955 in Amsterdam. He was taught classical ballet and modern dance by well-known Dutch pedagogues such as Florrie Rodrigo, Ineke Sluiter and Lucas Hoving. Alexandra Radius
Alexandra Mary Theodora (Lex) Radius (born 3 July 1942 in Amsterdam) is a retired Dutch ballerina. Radius had her debut in 1957 at the Netherlands Ballet of Sonia Gaskell. There, in 1959, she met Han Ebbelaar, who would become her husband and lifelong dancing partner. Radius and Ebbelaar were soloists at the Dutch National Ballet, the Nederlands Dans Theater and, between 1968 and 1970, the American Ballet Theatre. Radius danced in classical pieces, but also in contemporary choreographies like those by Rudi van Dantzig and Hans van Manen. Her other regular dancing partners were Rudolf Nureyev, Henny Jurriëns and Alan Land. In 1990, she stopped performing ballet at the age of 48, on which occasion she was awarded the Medal of Honor for Art and Science of the Order of the House of Orange.
