Côte D'Ivoire At The Paralympics
Ivory Coast first competed at the Paralympic Games in 1996. It has participated in every Summer Paralympics since then, but has never taken part in the Winter Paralympics. Côte d'Ivoire has won four Paralympic medals, three gold and one bronze, all in the sport of track and field athletics. All three of the gold medals were won by Oumar Basakoulba Kone. The national flag of Ivory Coast () is a tricolour flag consisting of equal bands of orange, white, and green. The proportions of the flag are 2:3. The Paralympic Games or Paralympics is a periodic series of international multisport events involving athletes with a range of disability, disabilities. The Summer Paralympics, also known as the Games of the Paralympiad, are an international multi-sport event where athletes with physical disabilities compete. This includes athletes with mobility disabilities, amputations, blindness, and cerebral palsy. The Paralympic Games are held every four years, organized by the International Paralympic Committee. The Winter Paralympic Games is an international multi-sport event where athletes with physical disabilities compete in snow and ice sports. The event includes athletes with mobility impairments, amputations, blindness, and cerebral palsy. The Winter Paralympic Games are held every four years directly following the Winter Olympic Games and (since 1992) hosted in the same city. Track and field (or athletics in British English) is a sport that includes Competition#Sports, athletic contests based on running, jumping, and throwing skills. The name used in North America is derived from where the sport takes place, a running track and a grass field for the throwing and some of the jumping events. Oumar Basakoulba Kone
Oumar Basakoulba Kone is a paralympic athlete from Côte d'Ivoire. He has competed in category T46 (limb deficiency, having had his right hand amputated), mainly in the 400m and 800m events. Oumar has competed at a total of four Paralympics, starting in 1996 where he won gold in both the 800m (setting a world record, at 1 minute 55.45 secs ) and 400m (in 50.23 seconds) as well as competing in the 1500m. He repeated these events at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, earning gold in the 800m. In his next two games in 1996 and 2008, he competed in just the 400m and 800m but was unable to add any further medals. The 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, were held from August 16 to 25. It was the first Paralympics to get mass media sponsorship, and had a budget of USD $81 million. The 2000 Summer Paralympic Games or the XI Summer Paralympics were held in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, between 18 and 29 October. The Sydney Paralympics was the last time that the Summer Paralympics were organized by two different Organizing Committees. In this edition, a record 3,801 athletes from 120 National Paralympic Committees participated in 551 events in 18 sports.
