The César Award for Best Documentary Short Film () is an award presented annually by the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma from 1977 to 1991 and again since 2022. Background The César Award for Best Documentary Short Film was first awarded in 1977 and presented annually until 1991. It was replaced by the integrated César Award for Best Short Film (1992–2021). In September 2021, the governing association of the César Awards voted to create two new awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Documentary Short Film, both of which were introduced in the 47th ceremony (2022). The documentary short category was established with the desire to "reveal emerging documentary filmmakers." Jean Gaumy (born 1948) is a French photographer and filmmaker who has been associated with Magnum Photos since 1977 who has specialised in depictions of isolated or confined communities and groups. Early life and education Jean Gaumy was born on 28 August 1948 in Royan Pontaillac (Charente-Maritime), France. He attended schools in Toulouse and Aurillac, then undertook his higher education in Rouen, before working as editor and Freelancer, freelance photographer in the Paris-Normandy area. Career Gaumy was a member of the Viva agency before he was recruited for French Gamma (agency), Gamma in 1973 by Raymond Depardon. In 1975 he undertook extended documentation of subjects never before broached in France; the first, "L’Hopital" was published in 1976; the second, "Les Incarcérés", on French prisons was made in 1976 and published in 1983 with extracts from his personal journal written in the first person. Chris Marker (; 29 July 1921 – 29 July 2012) (born ''Christian-François Bouche-Villeneuve'') was a French writer, photographer, documentary film director, multimedia artist and Essay#Film, film essayist. Simone Bitton
Simone Bitton (; born January 3, 1955) is a French-Moroccan documentary filmmaker. Her films have been nominated for or won the César Award, the Marseille Festival of Documentary Film Award, and the Sundance Film Festival, Special Jury Prize (for ''Mur''). Personal life Bitton was born the daughter of a Jewish jeweller in Rabat, Morocco. In 1966 she immigrated to Israel with her family and served in the IDF during the Yom Kippur War. She describes herself as a Mizrahi Jew.
