Cândido Lima Da Silva Dias
Cândido Lima da Silva Dias (Mococa, December 31, 1913 – São Paulo, September 15, 1998) was a Brazilian mathematician and one of the first graduates in mathematics from the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of the University of São Paulo (FFCL). He was an important figure in the creation of the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of São Paulo. Biography Cândido was born in 1913 in the city of Mococa. He was the son of Gabriel Antonio da Silva Dias, an electrical engineer who graduated from the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo in 1905, and Adília Lima da Silva Dias, a housewife. Encouraged by his father, Cândido began to learn and play with numbers, as well as arithmetic. To continue his studies, he moved to São Paulo, where he studied at the Colégio Franco Brasileiro. Mococa is a municipality in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. The population is 68,980 (2020 est.) in an area of 855 km². The elevation is 645 m. Carlos Benjamin De Lyra
Carlos Benjamin de Lyra (Pernambuco, 23 November 1927 – São Paulo, 21 July 1974) was a prominent Brazilian mathematician, a pioneer in algebraic topology in Brazil and professor at the University of São Paulo. Born in Recife, Pernambuco, he came from a family of sugarcane plantation owners and his dad was the owner of the ''Diário de Pernambuco'', a newspaper that was known nationwide. Lyra was an important mathematician in his area, his course ''Introdução à Topologia Algébrica'' was taught in the first ''Colóquio Brasileiro de Matemática'' and would become the first text in this field written in Brazilian Portuguese. After the death of his father, his mother married a Wall Street stockbroker and, together, the couple moved to New York City with Lyra and his younger brother. Maria Laura Moura Mouzinho Leite Lopes or Maria Laura Mouzinho Leite Lopes or Maria Laura Lopes (Timbaúba, October 18, 1917 – Rio de Janeiro, June 20, 2013) was a Brazilian mathematician, the first Brazilian woman PhD in mathematics, specializing in Mathematics education. A renowned mathematician, she fought the dictatorship and articulated the creation of research institutions. She was part of the group that articulated the foundation of the Brazilian Center for Research in Physics (CBPF), an institute she created together with José Leite Lopes and César Lattes in 1949.
