Czech Republic At The 1996 Summer Olympics
The Czech Republic competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States. It was the first Summer Games since the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, and so the Czech Republic and Slovakia competed as independent teams. 115 competitors, 76 men and 39 women, took part in 110 events in 17 sports. Tennis At The 1996 Summer Olympics – Women's Doubles
Defending gold medalists Gigi Fernández and Mary Joe Fernández of the United States successfully defended their title, defeating the Czech Republic's Jana Novotná and Helena Suková in the final, 7–6(8–6), 6–4 to win the gold medal in Women's Doubles tennis at the 1996 Summer Olympics. In the bronze-medal match, Spain's Conchita Martínez and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario defeated the Netherlands' Manon Bollegraf and Brenda Schultz-McCarthy, 6–1, 6–3. The tournament was held at the Stone Mountain Tennis Center in Atlanta, of the United States. There were 62 competitors from 31 countries. Gymnastics At The 1996 Summer Olympics
At the 1996 Summer Olympics, two different gymnastics disciplines were contested: artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics. The artistic gymnastics events were held at the Georgia Dome from July 20–25 and July 28–29. The rhythmic gymnastics events were held at Stegeman Coliseum in nearby Athens, on the campus of the University of Georgia from August 1–4. The women's rhythmic group all-around was contested for the first time at these Games. This marked the second time that a women's only sport was introduced to the Games. Jana Novotná
Jana Novotná (; 2 October 1968 – 19 November 2017) was a Czech professional tennis player. She was ranked world No. 2 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) in 1997, and as the world No. 1 in women's doubles for 67 weeks. Novotná won the women's singles title at Wimbledon in 1998, and was runner-up in three other singles majors. She also won twelve major women's doubles titles (completing a double career Grand Slam), four major mixed doubles titles, and three Olympic medals. Novotná played a serve and volley game, an increasingly rare style of play among women during her career. Career Novotná turned professional in February 1987. She was known primarily for her success as a doubles player in the early years of her career. Martin Doktor
Martin Doktor (; born 21 May 1974 in Polička, Czechoslovakia) is the Czech Republic's best-known sprint canoeist. He was double Olympic champion in the Canadian canoe C-1 discipline at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. During the 1996 games, his mother cooked ''knedliky'' ( Dumplings in Czech), using dozens of kg of flour brought over from the Czech Republic. Doktor went on to win 14 medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, including two golds (C-1 200 m: 1998, C-1 500 m: 1997), nine silvers (C-1 200 m: 1997, 1999, 2003; C-1 500 m: 1995, 1999; C-1 1000 m: 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001), and three bronzes (C-1 500 m: 2003, C-1 1000 m: 1999, C-4 1000 m: 1998). The United States' Lindsay Davenport defeated Spain's Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in the final, 7–6(10–8), 6–2 to win the gold medal in Women's Singles tennis at the 1996 Summer Olympics. In the bronze-medal match, the Czech Republic's Jana Novotná defeated the United States' Mary Joe Fernández, 7–6(10–8), 6–4. Sánchez Vicario became the second woman to win multiple Olympic tennis medals in singles (following Steffi Graf in 1988 and 1992); Fernández would have done so as well, but the rules had been changed since the last Games to add a bronze medal playoff match.
