Cycling At The 2024 Summer Olympics – Men's Madison
The men's Madison event at the 2024 Summer Olympics took place on 10 August 2024 at the Vélodrome National de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. Background This was the 5th appearance of the event after it was introduced at the 2000 Olympics. Qualification Competition format A madison race is a tag team points race that involves all 16 teams competing at once. One cyclist from each team competes at a time; the two team members can swap at any time by touching (including pushing and hand-slinging). The distance is 200 laps (50 km). Teams score points in two ways: lapping the field and sprints. A team that gains a lap on the field earns 20 points; one that loses a lap has 20 points deducted. Every 10th lap is a sprint, with the first to finish the lap earning 5 points, second 3 points, third 2 points, and fourth 1 point. The points values are doubled for the final sprint. Vélodrome National
The Vélodrome National de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines is a velodrome in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, France. It was built between 2011 and 2014 and hosted the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, 2015, 2022 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, and the 2016 UEC European Track Championships. It hosted the cycling venue in the 2024 Summer Olympics. The track is 250 m long and 8 m wide, a metre wider than most other tracks. The velodrome is 36km from the Olympic Village, and is close to other 2024 Summer Olympics venues: Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines BMX Stadium, Golf National, Colline d'Élancourt (mountain biking), and the Palace of Versailles. Benjamin Thomas (born 12 September 1995) is a French professional road and track cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam . He rode at the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. In August 2018, he was named in the startlist for the 2018 Vuelta a España. In October 2020, he was named in the startlist for the 2020 Giro d'Italia. Mark Stewart (born 25 August 1995) is a Scottish road and track cyclist, who currently rides for UCI ProTeam . Representing Great Britain and Scotland at international competitions, Stewart won the bronze medal at the 2016 UEC European Track Championships in the team pursuit.
