Cycling At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's Team Pursuit
The men's team pursuit event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place from 2 to 4 August 2021 at the Izu Velodrome. 32 cyclists (8 teams of 4) from 8 nations competed. Background This was the 25th appearance of the event, which has been held at every Summer Olympics since its introduction in 1908 except for 1912, when no track cycling was held. The reigning Olympic champions were Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Owain Doull, and Bradley Wiggins of Great Britain; Great Britain had won the last three Olympic events (with Clancy on the team for all three, Wiggins for the first and third, and Burke for the last two). Izu Velodrome
The Izu Velodrome is a velodrome in Izu, Shizuoka, Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Shizuoka, Japan. It has a 250-metre cycling track and spectator facilities for 3,600 people. It was opened in 2011, and was selected as the venue to host the track cycling events at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. It is the only indoor 250-metre velodrome with a wooden timber surface in Japan, as other velodromes in Japan are outdoors that are longer than 250-metres and with asphalt surfaces, dedicated largely for keirin. Team Pursuit
The team pursuit is a track cycling event similar to the individual pursuit, except that two teams, each of up to four riders, compete, starting on opposite sides of the velodrome. Race format Both men's and women's events are competed over a distance of 4 km, by a team of 4 riders. Prior to the start of the 2012–13 season the women's event was competed over a distance of 3 km, by a team of 3 riders. As with the individual pursuit, the objective is to cover the distance in the fastest time or to catch and overtake the other team in a final. Riders in a team follow each other closely in line, drafting to minimize total drag, and periodically the lead rider (who works the hardest) peels off the front, swings up the track banking and rejoins the team at the rear.
