Cycling At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's Individual Pursuit
The women's individual pursuit at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on August 17 at the Laoshan Velodrome. The first round of this track cycling event consisted of head-to-head races over a 3000 m distance, but with the results being treated as time trial results rather than elimination rounds. The top eight times from the first round qualified the cyclists for the elimination round, and either or both of the cyclists in each first round race could move on. In the match round, the eight cyclists were paired off according to the seeding from the first round. The winner of each match round match advanced to the final, while the four losers were given final rankings (5th through 8th) based on their times in the match round. The four finalists were placed into the gold medal match and bronze medal match based on their times in the match round. Track cycling is a Cycle sport, bicycle racing sport usually held on specially built banked tracks or velodromes using purpose-designed track bicycles. History Track cycling has been around since at least 1870. When track cycling was in its infancy, it was held on velodromes similar to the ones used today. These velodromes consisted of two straights and slightly banked turns, though they varied more in length and material than the modern 250 m track. One appeal of indoor track racing was that spectators could be easily controlled, and hence an entrance fee could be charged, making track racing a lucrative sport. Early track races attracted crowds of up to 2,000 people. Indoor tracks also enabled year-round cycling for the first time. Sarah Hammer
Sarah Kathryn Hammer (born August 18, 1983) is an American former professional racing cyclist and four-times Olympic silver medalist. With eight world championships, she has been called, "America's most decorated track athlete." Hammer announced her retirement from professional Cycling on September 23, 2017. Career Hammer is five-times a champion (2006, 2007, 2010, 2011 & 2013) in the individual pursuit and twice a champion (2013 & 2014) in the omnium at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Hammer finished fifth overall in the individual pursuit and did not finish in the points race. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Hammer won a team silver medal in the Women's team pursuit, as well as an individual silver medal in the women's omnium. Evelyn Yesenia García Marroquín (born December 29, 1982) is a Salvadoran cycle racer, who specialises as an all-rounder, having won time-trials and mountain stages in the past. She has won the Vuelta a El Salvador on two occasions, the only woman to do so, in 2004 and 2007. Born in Santa Ana, García competed in the Summer Olympic Games in 2004 and 2008, both times in the road race and the track individual pursuit. Svetlana Pauliukaitė (born 31 July 1985 in Mosėdis) is a Lithuanian professional track and road cyclist. She has won 12 national road and track championships medals. Verena Jooss
Verena of Zurzach, also known as Saint Verena ( 260 – ), was an early Christian consecrated virgin and hermit. She is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Catholic Church, Roman Catholic Church and Oriental Orthodox Churches. She is especially venerated in Switzerland, where her Cult (religious practice), cult is attested in Bad Zurzach, the reported place of her burial, from at least the 5th century. Her feast is on 1 September.
