Cycling At The 1992 Summer Olympics – Men's Sprint
The men's sprint (track cycling) at the 1992 Summer Olympics (Cycling) was an event that consisted of cyclists making three laps around the track. Only the time for the last 200 metres of the 750 metres covered was counted as official time. The races were held on Tuesday, July 28, Wednesday, July 29, Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31, 1992, at the Velòdrom d'Horta. There were 23 competitors from 23 nations, with each nation limited to one cyclist. The event was won by Jens Fiedler of Germany, the first victory in the men's sprint for Germany as a unified nation since 1936 (though East Germany had won two gold medals since). Gary Neiwand of Australia took silver, the third time that nation had a runner-up in the event; Neiwand was only the fourth man to win multiple medals in the sprint (adding to his 1988 bronze). Velòdrom D'Horta
Velòdrom d'Horta is a velodrome located in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was the Cycling at the 1992 Summer Olympics, track cycling venue for the 1992 Summer Olympics and was also the venue for the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 1984 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, 1984. The velodrome, designed by Esteve Bonell and Francesc Rius, was built in 1984 as the first of Barcelona's construction projects in preparation for the bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics in 1986. It was the first velodrome built to new FIAC rules permitting a track if surfaced with wood. The building won the FAD architecture prize in 1985. It was the last permanent open-air velodrome used for Olympic Track Cycling events (Atlanta's velodrome at Stone Mountain in 1996 was temporary). Lutz Heßlich
Lutz Heßlich (born 17 January 1959) is a former racing cyclist from East Germany. He competed for East Germany in the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow, Soviet Union in the individual sprint event where he finished in first place. He missed the 1984 Summer Olympics due to the Soviet led boycott but returned to the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea where he won a second gold medal in the individual sprint. In October 1986, he was awarded a Star of People's Friendship in gold (second class) for his sporting success. Between 1979 and 1987 he was four times world champion in individual sprint. Private life Lutz Heßlich lives with his family in Cottbus where since Die Wende, 1989 he has run a bicycle shop.
