Alexander Stockton Cussons (1914–1986) was the Chairman of Cussons Group, the largest independent soap manufacturer in Britain. Alexander continued manufacturing of the famous brand Cussons Imperial Leather, and many other products under the Cussons label, including 1001 Carpet Cleaner. Family Born in Salford, England to Alexander Tom Cussons (1875–1951) and his wife Emily Jane Cussons (née Kidd; 1875–1957). Career Alexander Cussons worked at the Cussons Company from 1931 until his retirement in 1968. Before becoming chairman of the main Cussons Company, he was chairman of the South African subsidiary. South Africa was the first overseas market for the Cussons brand. In 1963, Alexander succeeded his elder brother, Leslie (1907-1963), to become chairman of the Cussons Company. Alexander Tom Cussons
__NOTOC__ Alexander Tom Cussons (14 July 1875 – 20 August 1951) was the Chairman of Cussons Sons & Co, the largest independent soap manufacturer in Britain and maker of the brand Cussons Imperial Leather and other personal care products. Cussons was born in Holbeck, Leeds, England to Thomas Tomlinson Cussons (1838–1927) and his wife Elizabeth Cussons (née Ashton, 1843–1905). Career Tom Cussons was apprenticed in the town of Ossett. He then moved to Swinton, Salford with his parents. There Tom Cussons worked in partnership with Ernest Jonathan Lake in the firm of Lake, Cussons, and Company. The firm operated as a wholesale druggist until 25 January 1894 when the partnership was dissolved. Tom Cussons then continued in partnership with his father. The family partnership purchased a farm in Kersal in Manchester which was above an old bleach works at the foot of the hill. Leslie Cussons
Leslie Cussons (13 January 1907 – 6 September 1963) was the Chairman of Cussons Sons & Co, the largest independent soap manufacturer in Britain. Leslie continued manufacturing of the famous brand Cussons Imperial Leather. Family Born in Swinton, near Salford, Lancashire, England to Alexander Tom Cussons (1875–1951) and his wife, Emily Jane Cussons ( Kidd; 1875–1957). Career Leslie Cussons worked at the Cussons Company from 1924 until his death in 1963. In 1951, he succeeded his father to become chairman of the Cussons Company. He oversaw the acquisition of Gerard Bros. in 1955, and subsequently made extensive improvements to the Gerard Bros Nottingham factory. In 1957, he also acquired the 1001 Carpet Cleaner brand, and made it into Britain's leading carpet cleaner. In 1963, he showed Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh around his factory in Kersal, Salford. Sheila Cussons
Sheila Cussons (9 August 1922 – 25 November 2004) was an Afrikaans poet. She was born on the Moravia missionary station near Piketberg, South Africa, and, after matriculating from Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool, studied fine arts at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg. She was one of the most important poets in Afrikaans, besides an accomplished painter and artist. The poet D.J. Opperman was influential in her decision to write in Afrikaans, while N. P. van Wyk Louw maintained prolonged correspondence with her, which they both considered as beneficial to their work. Nevertheless, she always deemed herself to be a visual artist in the first instance, and a poet second. Publishing 11 volumes of poetry during her lifetime, she received the Ingrid Jonker Prize (1970), the Eugène Marais Prize (1971), the WA Hofmeyr Prize three times (1972, 1982 and 1991), the CNA Prize (1981), the Louis Luyt Prize (1982), and the prestigious Hertzog Prize in 1983. Thomas Tomlinson Cussons (24 November 1838 – 18 March 1927) was the head of the British soap manufacturing business Cussons & Son. He established the 'Cussons' brand which has become one of the largest personal care brands in United Kingdom, Britain. Early life Thomas Cussons was born in Kingston upon Hull, England to George Cussons (1804–1858) and his wife Jane Cussons (née Moss 1804–1882). Career Cussons qualified as a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in 1869. After qualifying Cussons opened a chemist in Holbeck, Leeds. In 1879 he sold the Holbeck branch and acquired an existing chemist in Louth, Lincolnshire, Louth. In the early 1880s Cussons opened a chemist in the town of Ossett, where he also operated as a wine merchant. He enjoyed an exclusive right to distribute W & A Gilbey Wines in Ossett.
