The four elected officials serve concurrent four year terms (term limit of two). Crow Tribe
The Crow, whose Endonym and exonym, autonym is Apsáalooke (), are Native Americans in the United States, Native Americans living primarily in southern Montana. Today, the Crow people have a List of federally recognized tribes in the United States, federally recognized tribe, the Crow Tribe of Montana, with an Indian reservation, the Crow Indian Reservation, located in the south-central part of the state. Crow Native Americans are a Plains Indians, Plains tribe, who speak the Crow language, part of the Missouri River Valley branch of Siouan languages. Robert Yellowtail
Robert Summers Yellowtail (August 4, 1889 – June 20, 1988) was a leader of the Crow Tribe. Described as a "20th-century warrior", Yellowtail was the first Native American to hold the post of Agency Superintendent at a reservation. Early life and education Yellowtail was born in Lodge Grass, Montana in 1889. Throughout his life, Yellowtail went by three Crow names. He was referred to as Bíawakshish, or "Summer", then Shoopáaheesh, or "Four War Deeds", and finally Axíchish, or "The Wet", which was shared with another war chief who was in the same clan as Yellowtail. Separated from his mother at the age of 4 years old, Yellowtail was culturally assimilated into a reservation boarding school. When he was 13 years old, he went to the Sherman Institute, in Riverside, California, graduating in 1907. Edison Real Bird
Edison Real Bird was the chairman of the Crow Tribe Tribal Council from 1966 to 1972. While in that position, he implemented several key democratic reforms, and oversaw the election of Pauline Small, the first woman to be elected in the Crow Tribe. He was photographed at the signing of the Crow Tribal Agreement, with Stewart Udall and Arnold Olsen, in 1961. Pauline Small
Pauline Small (November 30, 1924 – March 9, 2005) was the first woman to be elected to office in the Crow Tribe of Montana. In 1966 she was elected to Vice-Secretary of the Crow Tribal Council, holding office ''de facto'' to 1972, and served in various positions within the Crow Tribal Offices, many to do with supporting education. Clara Mae White Hip Nomee (May 12, 1938 – January 31, 2012) was an Crow politician and tribal leader who served as the Crow Chairperson, Chairwoman of the Crow Tribe of Montana for five-terms from 1990 to 2000. Nomee was the first woman to hold the chairmanship of the Crow Tribe. Clifford Birdinground
Clifford Birdinground is an American politician and member of the Crow Tribe of Montana. Birdinground served as the Chairman of the Crow Tribe from 2000 to 2002. Birdinground's predecessor, former Chairwoman Clara Nomee, was indicted in 1997 convicted of felony theft of tribal land in September 1998. However, her conviction to did not prohibit her from holding tribal office. She ran for re-election for a sixth term in 2000. However, Birdinground won the May 2000 election, defeating Nomee with 67% of the vote. Birdinground took office in 2000. Upon taking office, Birdinground canceled all deals and transactions made by the Nomee administration following her 1997 indictment. He also fired approximately 130 tribal government employees. Carl Venne
Carl Venne (July 20, 1946 – February 15, 2009), whose Crow name was Aashiise Dakatak Baacheitchish, was, until his death, the chairman of the executive branch of the Crow Tribe. He won a November 2002 special election held after the September 2002 resignation of Chairman Clifford Birdinground. Venne was sworn into office on November 12, 2002. He served until his death on February 15, 2009. Venne served on the Montana Meth Project and Advisory Council of the State of Montana Department of Corrections.
