Cortez, a census-designated place (CDP) in Manatee County, Florida, United States, is a small Gulf Coast commercial fishing village that was founded by settlers from North Carolina in the 1880s. The population was 4,121 at the 2020 census, down from 4,241 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area, North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Early history Present-day Cortez was a part of the Safety Harbor culture region from about 900 CE until the 1700s. The Safety Culture people formed chiefdoms and villages along the shoreline of Tampa Bay and the adjacent Gulf of Mexico coast. Cortez, Nevada
Cortez is a ghost town in Lander County, in the U.S. state of Nevada. The GNIS classifies it as a populated place. History Located near Mount Tenabo, Cortez first attracted attention in 1862, when Mexican miners transported silver ore from the site to stamp mills in Austin, south. In the spring of 1863, a group of eight miners exploring the area, came across Native Americans collecting silver in gulleys southwest of the Mount Tenabo mountains. Investigating the source of the silver ore, the group climbed the rock face above, and located the ledges of silver. The discovery led to the organization of the Cortez district. A few months later, roads were constructed from the town site to the mining area. Machinery to build an eight-stamp mill in town was transported from California. The community was named after Hernán Cortés, the 16th-century Spanish conquistador. Amado Cortez (born Arsenio Ruiz Padilla, December 14, 1927 – March 22, 2003) was a Filipino actor and diplomat. His father was Jose Padilla Sr., a governor in Plaridel, Bulacan and his mother was Maria Clara Ruiz. Bella Cortez (born Alicia Paneque, also known as Bella Cortese) is a Cuban actress and dancer known for her work in Italian sword-and-sandal films of the 1960s. Christopher Michael Cortez (born July 24, 1988) is an American former professional soccer player. Youth career Cortez, who is of Mexican descent, attended the Trabuco Hills High School, where he earned South Coast League first-team all-league honors as both a junior and a senior, and led his team to the South Coast League Championship in 2005. He played club soccer for Pateadores, and played one year of college soccer at the University of California, Berkeley, before signing with Chivas USA's youth academy. Gregorio Cortez Lira (June 22, 1875 – February 28, 1916) was born in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico on June 22, 1875 and became a folk hero to the border communities of the United States and Mexico. After an altercation in which he killed Sheriff W. T. (Brack) Morris, Cortez went on the run from the Texas Rangers for thirteen days. He became the target of the largest manhunt in U.S. history from June 14, 1901 to June 22, 1901. He was accused of murdering two sheriffs and finally convicted of horse theft. Celebrated by fellow Mexican-Americans for his ability to evade the authorities, as well as his impassioned words in court, Cortez's life was converted into a legend by people on the Rio Grande border.
