Cornell–Hobart Lacrosse Rivalry
The Cornell–Hobart rivalry is an college lacrosse, intercollegiate lacrosse rivalry between the Cornell Big Red men's lacrosse, Cornell Big Red, which represent Cornell University, and the Hobart Statesmen men's lacrosse, Hobart Statesmen, which represent Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Hobart College. It is one of the oldest rivalries in college lacrosse; the inaugural game in the series was played on May 5, 1898, with Hobart prevailing by a score of 2–1. As of 2023, Cornell leads the series 89–47–4. The game is the oldest ongoing college lacrosse series. The Johns Hopkins–Maryland lacrosse rivalry began in 1895, but the teams only played 7 times before 1924. Hobart Statesmen Men's Lacrosse
The Hobart Statesmen men's lacrosse team represents the Hobart and William Smith Colleges in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college lacrosse. The program was created in 1898 and plays its home games at Boswell Field. The Statesmen competed in the Northeast Conference from 2014 to 2022, with previous conference membership in the Patriot League and the ECAC Lacrosse League as a Division I program. Starting with the 2023 season, Hobart will play in the newly established men's lacrosse league of the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10). Through 2022, the team has an all–time record of 801-521-20. The NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament determines the annual top men's field lacrosse team in the NCAA Division I. This tournament has determined the national champion since the inaugural 1971 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship. From 1936 through 1970, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) awarded the Wingate Memorial Trophy annually to the collegiate champion based on regular season records. 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship
The 2004 NCAA Division I lacrosse tournament was the 34th annual tournament hosted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association to determine the team champion of men's college lacrosse among its Division I programs, held at the end of the 2004 NCAA Division I men's lacrosse season. Syracuse won the championship with a 14–13 win over Navy. The Orange, led by senior Michael Powell, scored the game winner with one minute left in the fourth quarter, claiming their eighth national title. Powell finished the game with one goal and five assists. Syracuse outscored Navy 3–1 in the final five minutes to overcome a 12-11 fourth-quarter deficit. The Tewaaraton Award is an annual award for the most outstanding American college lacrosse men's and women's players, since 2001. It is the lacrosse equivalent of football's Heisman Trophy. The award is presented by The Tewaaraton Foundation and the University Club of Washington, D.C. Lacrosse is the oldest sport played in North America and the award honors the Native American heritage of lacrosse in the name of its award, "Tewaaraton," the Mohawk name for their game and the progenitor of present-day lacrosse. NCAA Division III
NCAA Division III (D-III) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States. D-III consists of athletic programs at colleges and universities that choose not to offer athletic scholarships to their student-athletes. The NCAA's first split was into two divisions, the University and College Divisions, in 1956, the College Division was formed for smaller schools that did not have the resources of the major athletic programs across the country. The College Division split again in 1973 when the NCAA went to its current naming convention: Division I, Division II, and Division III.
