On 16 October 2022, the day of the commencement of the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, a Clash at the Consulate General of China, Manchester, clash occurred outside the consulate general between UK-based Democratic development in Hong Kong, Hong Kong pro-democracy activists and consulate members. The PRC has the largest number of active diplomatic posts in the world, including 274 bilateral posts (embassies and consulates) in 176 countries as well as 8 permanent missions to international organizations and two other posts (as of November 2023). For over fifty years, the PRC has been competing with the Republic of China (ROC) for diplomatic recognition in the international community. Until the 1970s, most countries in the world recognized the ROC over the PRC. As of 2018, a small number of states have full diplomatic relations with the ROC (see Republic of China diplomatic missions); the ROC maintains unofficial relations with most states. The 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), commonly referred to as ''Èrshí Dà'' ( zh, c=二十大), was held in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing from 16 to 22 October 2022. The National Congress is the highest organ of the party, and is stipulated to be held every five years. The conference had 2,296 delegates and 83 specially invited delegates. On 16 October 2022 the day of the opening of the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party a clash broke out at the Chinese consulate in Manchester, England, between United Kingdom-based Hong Kong pro-democracy activists and members of the People's Republic of China (PRC) consulate general. Incident The clash started when consulate members, including the consul general Zheng Xiyuan and staff who wore protective gear, attempted to take down protest signs that were being used as part of a demonstration against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) which was being held in the immediate vicinity of the consulate general. During the course of the melee, a protester named Bob Chan was pulled into consulate grounds and physically assaulted before he was pulled back out with the help of Greater Manchester Police and other protesters. Zheng Xiyuan (; born May 1963) is a Chinese diplomat who served as the Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Manchester, United Kingdom. Early life and education Zheng was born in Sichuan, China. He studied at Lanzhou University, China Foreign Affairs University, the School of International Studies at Peking University, and Duke University. Zheng is married, and has a daughter.
