Construction Of Queensland Railways
Queensland's railway construction commenced in 1864, with the turning of the first sod of the Main Line by Lady Diamantina Bowen, the wife of Queensland's first governor Sir George Bowen at Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. A narrow gauge of was selected due to cost savings in providing a rail link to Toowoomba. Despite being built with bridges wide enough for standard gauge, and the fact that most other lines did not require heavy earthworks, the gauge remained the Queensland system norm. In 1890 there were 11 separate systems being operated by Queensland Railways. The duplications of workshops and other facilities and the inability to transfer locomotives and rolling stock to meet shifting traffic demands between lines created problems. Tablelands Railway Line
The Tablelands railway line is a railway line in North Queensland, Australia. It was opened in a series of sections between 1887 and 1916. It commences at Cairns and at its maximum extent, reached Ravenshoe at the southern end of the Atherton Tableland. The rail system served by this line was unusual for Queensland in that the majority of lines that connected to it were built by private companies and later purchased by the Queensland Government. It is known for its popular tourist services, the Kuranda Scenic Railway from Cairns to Kuranda and the multi-day Savannahlander from Cairns to Forsayth, which both incorporate heritage-listed sections of the line. Home Hill Railway Station
Home Hill railway station is on the North Coast line in Queensland, Australia, serving the town of Home Hill. It has one platform, with a passing loop across from it. Home Hill and Ayr are the two closest stations, 11 kilometres apart. History The North Coast railway line from Bobawaba to Townsville opened in 1913 and Home Hill railway station opened as part of it, for passengers and the sale of produce. By the 1970s, improvements to roads and the rising use of motor vehicles saw rail services in the region under threat of reduction or even closure. Rail motor service to Townsville ceased and in 1993 staff numbers at the Home Hill station were reduced. In 2003 the station and its goods shed was closed. However, the trains continue to stop at the station for passengers to board and disembark, under the supervision of the train crew rather than station staff. Cooroy Railway Station
Cooroy railway station is a heritage-listed railway station at 14 Myall Street, Cooroy, Shire of Noosa, Queensland, Australia. It is on the North Coast railway line serving the town of Cooroy. It was designed by the Office of the Chief Engineer of Queensland Rail and built in 1890 by Fitzwilliam Williams. It opened on 17 July 1891 with the opening of the line from Cooran. North Bundaberg Railway Station
North Bundaberg railway station is a closed railway station at 28 Station Street, North Bundaberg, Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia. It is on the North Coast railway line and linked that line to the Mount Perry railway line. The station was constructed in 1881, and it was to be used as the last stop of transporting raw materials such as copper from the mines to the coast for shipping. Very soon after the railway was completed, the production of the copper mines declined drastically. However, the line station still provided transport for sugar, timber, and other agricultural goods until portions of the Mt. Perry line began closing in 1960, completely closing the line in 1964. The Great Western Railway was a railway development proposal involving a total of five new lines in western Queensland, Australia. Construction started in 1911 on sections of four of the lines, and three were opened in part before the project was effectively abandoned in 1920.
