The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is a Public university, public Land-grant university, land-grant research university in Paradise, Nevada, United States. The campus is about east of the Las Vegas Strip. It was formerly part of the University of Nevada, Reno, University of Nevada from 1957 to 1969. It includes the Shadow Lane Campus, just east of the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, which houses both UNLV School of Medicine, School of Medicine and UNLV School of Dental Medicine, School of Dental Medicine. UNLV's law school, the William S. Boyd School of Law, is the only law school in the state. It is Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity". Shelley Berkley (née Rochelle Levine; born January 20, 1951) is an American businesswoman, politician and attorney who has served as Mayor of Las Vegas, mayor of Las Vegas since 2024. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, she was a member of the United States House of Representatives representing Nevada's 1st congressional district for six terms from 1999 until 2013. Previously, Berkley served as member of Nevada Assembly from 1983 to 1985 and as a member of the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education from 1990 to 1998. Between serving in Congress and being elected mayor of Las Vegas, Berkley held leadership roles at both Touro University Nevada, the Nevada campus and Touro University California, the California campus of the Touro University System.
