The Conseil des écoles publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario, also widely known as CEPEO, is the public school board responsible for education in the French language in Eastern Ontario, including the Ottawa area. The board consists of 12 trustees elected every 4 years during municipal elections in Ontario and 2 student trustees elected every year. The area in which the board operates covers 40,314 km2 of Ontario. It employs more than 3000 employees, the majority being teachers. Its headquarters are in Ottawa. The board was created January 1, 1998, when the Government of Ontario decided to create 12 French school boards across Ontario. The CEPEO is a member of the ''Association des conseils des écoles publique de l'Ontario'' ( ACÉPO). The Association des conseils scolaires des écoles publiques de l'Ontario (Ontario French-language Public School Boards' Association in English), or ACÉPO, is an educational organization with its headquarters on University Avenue, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. ACÉPO is an organization that represents the four public secular French first language school boards of Ontario. French language education for Francophones in Ontario is a constitutional right guaranteed by Section 23 of the ''Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms''.
