Ajaccio
Ajaccio (, , ; French language, French: ; or ; , locally: ; ) is the capital and largest city of Corsica, France. It forms a communes of France, French commune, prefecture of the Departments of France, department of Corse-du-Sud, and head office of the ''Territorial collectivity, Collectivité territoriale de Corse'' (capital city of Corsica). It is also the largest settlement on the island. Ajaccio is located on the west coast of the island of Corsica, southeast of Marseille. The original city went into decline in the Middle Ages, but began to prosper again after the Republic of Genoa, Genoese built a citadel in 1492, to the south of the earlier settlement. After the Corsican Republic was declared in 1755, the Genoese continued to hold several citadels, including Ajaccio, until the French conquest of Corsica, French took control of the island. Alata () is a commune in the Corse-du-Sud department, on the French island of Corsica. It is within the metropolitan area of the capital Ajaccio. Geography Alata is 7 km north of the city of Ajaccio and the village is at an altitude of 400m. Alata borders the sea in the Gulf of Lava which is in the Gulf of Sagone. The geographic boundaries of the town are between the ''Monte Gozzi'', the ''Gulf of Lava'', ''La Punta - Pozzo di Borgo'', ''Ajaccio'', ''Villanova'', ''Appietto'' and ''Afa'' (neighbouring communes) with its 3250 hectares of scrub and large forests of oak. Appietto
Appietto (; ) is a commune in the Corse-du-Sud department of France on the island of Corsica. Geography Appietto is located 17 km from Ajaccio, and stretches from the Gozzi mount to the coastline of the Gulf of Lava. This historic village culminates at 480 meters, while the rest of the town consists of several ancient villages (Volpaja, Lava Listincone, Picchio, Piscia Rossa) and recent subdivisions (Monté Nebbio, Chiosu Vecchiu, Vanghone, Filletta). The Ruisseau de Lava flows through the commune from east to west. It enters the sea in the Golfe de Lava, which has been designated a Natura 2000 site. Afa (), (), , is a commune in the Corse-du-Sud department on the island and collectivity of Corsica, France. Geography Afa town is a small town about north-east of Ajaccio, located north-west of the Gravona valley. Highway N194 forms the southern border of the commune and gives access to the town of Baleone. To access Afa from Ajaccio it is necessary to take the turn-off from Highway N194 to Highway D81 heading north to the intersection of Highway D161, which highway leads east into Afa village. Road D161 continues west through the canton to join Highway N193 forming an access road from the eastern side. There is also the D5 road giving access to Afa from ''Pratu Tondu'' in the east.
