French Wine
French wine is produced throughout all of France in quantities between 50 and 60 million hectolitres per year, or 7–8 billion bottles. France is one of the largest wine producers in the world. French wine traces its history to the 6th century BCE, with many of France's regions dating their wine-making history to Roman times. The wines produced range from expensive wines sold internationally to modest wines usually only seen within France such as the Margnat wines of the post-war period. Two concepts central to the better French wines are the notion of ''terroir'', which links the style of the wines to the locations where the grapes are grown and the wine is made, and the Protected designation of origin (''Appellation d'Origine ProtĂ©gĂ©e'', AOP) system, named ''Appellation d'origine contrĂ´lĂ©e'' (AOC) until 2012. Appellation rules closely define which grape varieties and winemaking practices are approved for classification in each of France's several hundred ge ... Appellation D%27origine Contrôlée
In France, the ''appellation d'origine contrĂ´lĂ©e'' (, ; abbr. AOC ) is a label that identifies an agricultural product whose stages of production and processing are carried out in a defined geographical area – the ''terroir'' – and using recognized and traditional know-how. The specificity of an AOC product is determined by the combination of a physical and biological environment with established production techniques transmitted within a human community. Together, these give the product its distinctive qualities. The defining technical and geographic factors are set forth in standards for each product, including wines, cheeses and meats. Other countries and the European Union have similar labeling systems. The European Union's protected designation of origin (PDO and PGI) system has harmonized the protection of all geographical indications and their registration. When labelling wine however, producers may still use recognized traditional terms like AOC, and are not requ ... Monopole (wine)
A () is an area controlled by a single winery (wine company) and can be as small as a named vineyard () or as large as an entire (AOC). Frequently this is mentioned on the label as it is rare for only one winery to produce all the wine from an area entitled to a certain name. Each wine is sold by only one company. The Napoleonic inheritance laws typically caused vineyards to be so finely divided among inheritors – down to even a single row of vines – that are needed to bottle commercial quantities of a wine. Whether a indicates a wine of unusual quality or not is a matter of debate. Nicolas Joly
Nicolas Joly (born 1945) is a French winegrower in the Loire wine region, and one of the pioneers and leading personalities of the biodynamic wine movement. Early life and education Joly studied at Columbia University and subsequently worked for J.P. Morgan in New York City as an investment banker. He was later posted to London, but left banking in 1977 to take over his family's wine estate, Château de la Roche aux Moines in Savennières. Wine career At the time he took over the family estate, Joly was sceptical about modern agriculture and the effect it had on nature. He encountered a book on biodynamic farming and took an active interest in the ideas found there, and from 1980 started to experiment with them in his wine estate. From 1981, the estate's top wine Clos de la CoulĂ©e de Serrant has been made biodynamically, and from 1984 the estate's entire range has been produced biodynamically. Biodynamic Wine
Biodynamic wines are wines made employing the pseudo-scientific methods called biodynamic both to grow the fruit and during the post-harvest processing. Biodynamic wine production uses organic farming methods (''e.g.,'' employing compost as fertilizer and avoiding most pesticides) while also employing soil supplements prepared according to Rudolf Steiner's formulas, following a planting calendar that depends upon astrological configurations, and treating the earth as "a ''living and receptive'' organism." Biodynamic viticulture Biodynamic methods are used in viticulture (grape growing) in a variety of countries, including France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, Australia, Argentina, Chile, Peru, South Africa, Canada, and the United States. In 2013, over 700 vineyards worldwide comprising more than 10,000 ha/24,710 acres were certified biodynamic. A number of very high-end, high-profile commercial growers have converted recently to biodynamic practices. According to ...
