Clackamas People
The Clackamas Indians are a band of Chinook of Native Americans who historically lived along the Clackamas River in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Today, Clackamas people are enrolled in the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon. In 1806, Lewis and Clark estimated their population to be 1,800. At the time the tribe lived in 12 villages located from the lower Columbia River to an area what is now called Oregon City. They resided towards the east side of the Willamette River. In February 1841, Reverend François Norbert Blanchet and Reverend Alvin F. Waller converted Clackamas Chief Popoh. The Clackamas signed a treaty in the fall of 1851, which Oregon Superintendent Anson Dart failed to ratify. They signed another treaty on January 10, 1855, which was ratified on March 3, 1855. The Chinookan languages are a small family of extinct languages spoken in Oregon and Washington along the Columbia River by Chinook peoples. Although the last known native speaker of any Chinookan language died in 2012, the 2009-2013 American Community Survey found 270 self-identified speakers of Upper Chinook. Clackamas River
The Clackamas River is an approximately tributary of the Willamette River in northwestern Oregon, in the United States. Draining an area of about , the Clackamas flows through mostly forested and rugged mountainous terrain in its upper reaches, and passes agricultural and urban areas in its lower third. The river rises in eastern Marion County, about east-southeast of Salem. The headwaters are on the slopes of Olallie Butte in the Mount Hood National Forest, about north of Mount Jefferson, at an elevation of in the Cascade Range. The Clackamas flows briefly north and then flows northwest through the mountains, passing through North Fork Reservoir and Estacada. It then emerges from the mountains southeast of Portland. Clackamas High School
Clackamas High School (CHS) is a public high school located in Clackamas, Oregon. It is the second oldest of the four high schools in the North Clackamas School District. History Clackamas High School itself was established in 1957 at a building in South Milwaukie, Oregon. Though, with its ever-growing attendance area of Happy Valley, CHS outgrew its small building. In 2002, the larger, modernized building was opened and the old building was converted into a middle school. Starting in the early-mid 2010s, students, staff, and families began to complain about the severe overcrowding occurring. The district resolved to eventually close Sunrise Middle School, which sat on the eastern portion of the campus, to create extra classroom space. Clackamas Community College (CCC) is a public community college in Oregon City, Oregon. Founded in 1966, it is one of the largest community colleges in the state of Oregon.
