Citizens' Municipal Party
The Citizens' Municipal Organisation (CMO), known before its expansion as the Citizens' Municipal Party (CMP), was an Australian political organisation that ran in local elections in the City of Brisbane. History The CMO was formed in 1936 after the recently formed Citizens' Municipal Party decided to expand to a greater organisation, citing a desire to avoid party politics. Despite this claim, it was closely affiliated with the Queensland branch of the United Australia Party in the early part of the organisation's existence, before moving to the Queensland People's Party when the Queensland UAP separated in 1944. The People's Party became the Queensland division of the Liberal Party, and CMO aligned itself with the Queensland Liberal division until its own dissolution. It ran candidates in City of Brisbane elections throughout its existence. Two Lord Mayors were elected representing the CMO — John Beals Chandler from 1940 to 1952 and Reg Groom from 1955 to 1961. United Australia Party – Queensland
The United Australia Party was the short-lived Queensland branch of the national United Australia Party in the 1930s and 1940s. Based around Brisbane, it spent the entire of its history in opposition, merging in 1941 into the Country-National Organisation. When that party separated in 1944, the remnants of the UAP joined the Queensland People's Party which in 1949 became the Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division) History Although the federal UAP was formed in 1931 amidst a reorganisation of the right of politics, at the state level the main conservative party remained the Country and Progressive National Party which combined urban and rural forces. In 1936 the CPNP separated out, with the Brisbane section became the Queensland branch of the national UAP whilst the rural section reconstituted as the Country Party. Brisbane Civic Party
The Brisbane Civic Party (BCP) was an Australian political party that briefly competed in Brisbane City Council elections. History After another defeat in 1970, the Citizens' Municipal Organisation (CMO) was described as "moribund" and did not contest the election. Instead, the Brisbane Civic Party was formed and led by Mitchelton Ward councillor John Andrews. Despite changes introduced by the Bjelke-Petersen state government before the 1973 election, which reduced the number of wards and removed the direct lord mayoral election, the BCP lost in a landslide. The Labor Party won 20 out of 21 seats, while the BCP won just one ward − Indooroopilly − while Andrews lost his seat in Mitchelton. Following the BCP's loss, the Liberal Party decided to endorse candidates, starting at the 1976 election. The CMO also disbanded around this time. Queensland People's Party
The Queensland Liberal Party, officially known as the Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), was the Queensland division of the Liberal Party of Australia until 2008. It was initially formed in October 1943 as the Queensland People's Party (QPP), which then absorbed the disbanded Queensland branch of the United Australia Party in 1944. In 1945, the QPP had an agreement with the newly formed Liberal Party, where in the "federal sphere", QPP would be the Queensland division of the Liberal Party and would run its candidates under the Liberal Party banner in federal elections. However, in the "state sphere", it would continue to exist individually under its own banner. In July 1949, the QPP was renamed to reflect its status as the Queensland division of the Liberal Party.
