The Church of St. Stephen is a historic Roman Catholic church building in St. Stephen, Minnesota, United States. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint Cloud. The church was constructed in 1903 in a rural community settled by Slovene immigrants. An 1890 rectory stands behind the church. With Both buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 for their state-level significance in the themes of architecture, exploration/settlement, and religion. The property was nominated for reflecting the settlement of rural Stearns County by Catholic immigrant groups clustered in small, ethnic hamlets dominated by a central church. John Jager
John Jager (Slovenized: ''Ivan Jager''; May 16, 1871 – October 31, 1959) was a Slovene–American architect and urban planner. John Jager was born in Bistra, Austria-Hungary (now Slovenia) at Railway Guard House 365A above the village, where his father worked as a railway guard. He was baptized ''Johann Jager''. He graduated from high school in Ljubljana in 1892, after which he studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology under Joseph Maria Olbrich and Otto Wagner. In 1898, he toured Lower Carniola, Pivka, the Vipava region, and the Karst Plateau, where he collected folk motifs to decorate the National Café ( sl, Narodna kavarna) in Ljubljana. In Vienna, he worked as an assistant to Max Fabiani. He graduated from the University of Vienna in 1900. In 1901, he went to Beijing at the invitation of the Austrian government to build shelters for its soldiers during the Boxer Rebellion. He emigrated to the United States in 1902. Romanesque Revival (or Neo-Romanesque) is a style of building employed beginning in the mid-19th century inspired by the 11th- and 12th-century Romanesque architecture. Unlike the historic Romanesque style, Romanesque Revival buildings tended to feature more simplified arches and windows than their historic counterparts. An early variety of Romanesque Revival style known as Rundbogenstil ("Round-arched style") was popular in German lands and in the German diaspora beginning in the 1830s. Stearns County, Minnesota
Stearns County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 158,292. Its county seat and largest city is St. Cloud. The county was founded in 1855. It was originally named for Isaac Ingalls Stevens, then renamed for Charles Thomas Stearns. Stearns County is part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Minneapolis- St. Paul Combined Statistical Area. History The Stearns County area was formerly occupied by numerous indigenous tribes, such as the Sioux ( Dakota), Chippewa (Ojibwe) and Winnebago ( Ho-chunk). The first large immigration was of German Catholics in the 1850s. Early arrivals also came from eastern states.
