Christian Hess House and Shoemaker's Shop, also known as the Christian Hess Homestead and Weaver House, is a historic home and commercial building located at Schoharie, Schoharie County, New York. The house was built about 1783, and is a -story, banked, timber frame dwelling in a traditional New World Dutch style. A wing was added in 1977. Also on the property is a small shoemaker's shop, built about 1805. It is an L-shaped building with a gable roof. Schoharie ( ) is an incorporated town in and the county seat of Schoharie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,107 at the 2020 census. The Town of Schoharie has a village, also called Schoharie. Both are derived from the Mohawk word for driftwood. The town is on the northeast border of the county. It is part of the Capital District of New York. History This area was long occupied by indigenous peoples; in the historic period, the Mohawk people, one of the Five Nations of the ''Haudenosaunee,'' or Iroquois Confederacy, dominated this territory, ranging up to the St. Lawrence River and east to the Hudson. Although the English claimed New York province after taking control from the Dutch, the first European settlements in this area were by Palatine Germans in 1713, after the area was first explored in 1710/11. Schoharie County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 29,714, making it the state's fifth-least populous county. The county seat is Schoharie. "Schoharie" comes from a Mohawk word meaning "floating driftwood."
