Charleston Cougars Men's Basketball
The Charleston Cougars men's basketball team is an NCAA Division I college basketball team representing the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. The Cougars compete in the Coastal Athletic Association. Home games are played at TD Arena, located on College of Charleston's campus. While a member of the NAIA, they were National Champions in 1983. The Cougars have appeared in the NCAA tournament seven times, most recently in 2024. History The College of Charleston has sponsored a men's basketball team since 1898. They have been NCAA Division I since 1991 in the Trans-Atlantic Athletic Conference (now ASUN Conference), the Southern Conference and presently the Coastal Athletic Association (formerly the Colonial Athletic Association). In 2012, ESPN ranked Charleston as the 73rd best college basketball program in the previous 50 years, which was the highest ranking of all Division I teams in the state of South Carolina. Coastal Athletic Association
The Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), formerly the ECAC South Conference and the Colonial Athletic Association, is a collegiate List of NCAA conferences, athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA's NCAA Division I, Division I whose full members are located in East Coast of the United States, East Coast states, from Massachusetts to South Carolina. John Kresse
John Leopold Kresse V (born April 17, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American basketball coach and writer. Career and personal life Kresse is former head coach of the College of Charleston Cougars and assistant coach with the New York Nets and St. John's University. Kresse has the 5th highest winning percentage (.797) of any Division 1 NCAA college basketball coach with 560 wins and 143 losses during his 23 years as head coach of the College of Charleston. Kresse retired from coaching duties in 2002. In 2005, Kresse was inducted into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. The John Kresse Arena is named after him. Prior to the 2008–2009 basketball season, the College of Charleston moved to the Carolina First Arena where the playing surface is named John Kresse Court in honor of the coach. John Kresse Arena
John Kresse Arena is a 3,000-seat multi-purpose arena in Charleston, South Carolina. It was the home to the College of Charleston Cougars basketball team from 1982 to 2008. The facility opened as the F. Mitchell Johnson Arena in 1982. In 1994, it was renamed after the school's longtime head basketball coach John Kresse--making Kresse one of the few active collegiate coaches to coach in an arena that is named for him. It hosted the 1997 and 1998 Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball tournaments. Wake Forest Demon Deacons Men's Basketball
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons men's basketball team represents Wake Forest University in NCAA Division I college basketball and competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Through the years, the program has produced many NBA players, among them are Hall of Famer Tim Duncan, 12× All-Star Chris Paul, 1× All-Star Jeff Teague, Sixth Man of the Year Rodney Rogers, and 1× All-Star Josh Howard. 1994 NCAA Tournament
The 1994 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 17, 1994, and ended with the championship game at Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, on April 4, 1994. The tournament consisted of 63 games. The Final Four consisted of Arkansas, making its fifth trip and first since 1990, Arizona, Florida, making its first trip, and Duke, making its sixth trip in the last seven tournaments. In the national championship game, Arkansas defeated Duke by a score of 76–72 and won its first-ever national championship. 1994 TAAC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1994 Trans America Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament (now known as the ASUN men's basketball tournament) was held March 3–5 at the UCF Arena in Orlando, Florida. This was the first tournament since 1992 after not being held in 1993. Hosts defeated in the championship game, 70–67, to win their first TAAC/Atlantic Sun men's basketball tournament. The Golden Knights, therefore, received the TAAC's automatic bid to the 1994 NCAA tournament, their first Division I tournament appearance (College of Charleston also participated, receiving an at-large bid). Since the 1992 tournament, one program had departed the TAAC (Georgia Southern, who left for the SoCon) and three new programs were added (Central Florida in 1993, College of Charleston and Florida Atlantic in 1994), leaving total conference membership at ten teams. ASUN Conference Men's Basketball Player Of The Year
The ASUN Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year is an annual award given to the ASUN Conference's most outstanding player. The award was first given following the 1978–79 season, the first year of the ASUN's existence, when it was known as the Trans America Athletic Conference (TAAC). Only two players have won the award three times: Willie Jackson of Centenary (1982–1984) and Darius McGhee of Liberty (2021–2023). Centenary has the most all-time winners with six, but left the conference in 2000, when the league was still known as the TAAC. There has been only one tie in the award's history, which occurred in 1997–98 between Mark Jones of UCF and Sedric Webber of Charleston. Among the 12 current ASUN members, only four have had a winner: Eastern Kentucky, Florida Gulf Coast, Lipscomb, and North Florida.
