Fore River (Maine)
The Fore River is a short horn-shaped estuary, approximately long, separating Portland and South Portland in Maine in the United States. Many of the port facilities of the Portland harbor are along the estuary, which is formed just southwest of Portland by the confluence of several creeks. The estuary was initially known as Levett's River, so named by the first English settler of the Casco Bay region, Capt. Christopher Levett. But shortly afterwards, the estuary came to have the name by which it is known today. The Stroudwater River flows into the Fore River estuary. The Cumberland and Oxford Canal connected the estuary with Sebago Lake via the Stroudwater River from 1832 through 1870. The estuary enters Casco Bay on the southeast edge of Portland. Long Wharf is a historic wharf in Portland, Maine, on the edge of the Fore River. It stands across Commercial Street, between Market Street and Moulton Street and, on the waterfront side, between Portland Pier (to the north) and Chandler's Wharf (to the south). Widgery Wharf
Widgery Wharf (also Widgery's Wharf) is a historic wharf in Portland, Maine. Built in the late 1700s, across Commercial Street from the now-demolished Plum Street, the wharf is named for the Widgery family which controlled the local molasses trade at the time of completion. Members of the Widgery family include Congressman William Widgery. The precise date of the wharf's building is unknown, with possible years including 1760, 1774 and 1777. As of the 2000s, much of the wharf was covered during the laying of Commercial Street in the 1850s. Despite this, it is one of the oldest standing structures in Portland. John Chandler
John Chandler (February 1, 1762September 25, 1841) was an American politician and soldier of Maine. The political career of Chandler, a Democratic-Republican, was interspersed with his involvement in the state militia during both the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Biography Family background Chandler was born in Epping in the Province of New Hampshire. He was one of 10 children and the third-oldest son of Joseph Chandler (1725–1776) and his wife Lydia (née Eastman; 1726–1820). His father Joseph was a blacksmith.
