Cesária Évora
Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album '' Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s. Biography Early life Cesária Évora was born on 27 August 1941 in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde. When she was seven years old her father, Justino da Cruz Évora, who was a part-time musician, died, and at the age of ten she was placed in an orphanage, as her mother Dona Joana could not raise all six children. At the age of 16, she was persuaded by a friend to sing in a sailors' tavern. She grew up at the house in Mindelo which other singers used from the 1940s to the 1970s, at 35 Rua de Moeda. Luigi "Gigi" D'Alessio (born 24 February 1967) is an Italian popular singer and Neapolitan singer-songwriter. In his career, he has sold over 26 million records. Career D'Alessio was born in Naples. He was well known in Naples in the early 1990s and throughout Italy due to participation in the Sanremo Festival in 2000 and 2001. He has also made overseas appearances, the most recent was in Malta on 7 July 2012. He lives in Rome with the popular Italian singer Anna Tatangelo, who is two decades younger than him. Previously, he was married to Carmela Barbato, with whom he has three children, Claudio, Ilaria and Luca. ''Place 54'' (pronunciation: PLAHS cen-KAHNT KAHTR as it is a French-language title) is the third studio album by Nantes-based rap group Hocus Pocus, released in 2007. The album title refers to a seat in a passenger train car. Some of the tracks feature other artists such as Malik Mezzadri ("Quitte á t'aimer"), Omar ("Smile"), Fred Wesley and Stro the 89th Key ("Recyclé"), T-Love & The Procussions ("Vocab!"), Dalja and C2C ("Move On"), Elodie Rama and Tribeqa ("Touriste"), and Taïriq Keda, who produced "Je la Soul". Hocus Pocus (group)
Hocus Pocus is a French hip hop / jazz band from Nantes. Formed in 1995, their music is a mix of hip hop, jazz, soul and funk. Originally being 20syl's brainchild, Hocus Pocus was formed in 1995, and gradually gained attention in the late '90s. The band, however, reached significant commercial and critical success in 2006 with the re-release of 2005 LP ''73 Touches'', the "Hip Hop?" single (featuring The Procussions) having hooked many listeners who were curious about its blend of French, English, and acoustic/electronic elements. Though quite far removed from legendary bands evolving in that same category (like The Roots), Hocus Pocus' more radio-friendly recipe happened to be very effective. The band came back in 2007 with a mixed live/studio LP, '' Place 54'', featuring more international collaborations and another hit single, "Vocab!". ''Carnets de bord can also refer to a Swiss university newspaper of the University of Geneva'' ''Carnets de bord'' (French for ''logbook'') was the fifth studio album by Bernard Lavilliers released in 2004. The album reached number one in France and was also popular in other French speaking countries such as Belgium, where it reached number 11 in Wallonia, and number 19 in Switzerland. Some of the tracks featured other artists, including the Cape Verdean artist Cesária Évora on "Elle chante" and Tiken Jah Fakoly on "Question de peau". The track "Lété" (summer) is an adaptation of a single by Walter de Afogados and Fernando Alves titled "Morango do nordoeste". Translations include "Voyageur" (traveler), "Elle chante" (she sings) and "État des lieux" (state of a place, literally state of mind). One single "Brooklyn" is set in Brooklyn, New York. Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz Telles (18 November 1907 – 13 July 2003), known professionally as "Compay Segundo", was a Cuban trova guitarist, singer and composer. Biography Compay (meaning '' compadre'') Segundo, so called because he was always second voice in his musical partnerships, was born in Siboney, Cuba, and moved to Santiago de Cuba at the age of nine. His first engagement was in the Municipal Band of Santiago de Cuba, directed by his teacher, Enrique Bueno. In 1934, after a spell in a quintet, he moved to Havana, where he also played the clarinet in the Municipal Band. He also learned to play the guitar and the tres, which became his usual instruments. Compay Segundo also invented the armónico, a seven-stringed guitar-like instrument, to fill the harmonic jump between the Spanish guitar and the tres."Compay Segundo ... "Lágrimas negras" (Spanish for ''Black Tears'') is a bolero- son by Miguel Matamoros, first recorded by the Trío Matamoros in 1931. The song was written in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1930, when Matamoros was on his way back to Cuba from the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. The song has been described as the "perfect fusion of the son with the bolero". It became the Trío Matamoros' most famous song, along with "Son de la loma".
