Centre For The Study Of World Christianity
The Centre for the Study of World Christianity (CSWC) is a research centre based in New College, the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh. It was founded in the University of Aberdeen by Andrew F. Walls as the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World in 1982, but later moved by Walls to the University of Edinburgh in 1986. Its current name was adopted in 2009. The centre is currently directed by Alexander Chow and Emma Wild-Wood. Research The centre promotes historical, theological, and social scientific research in the field of World Christianity – broadly speaking, Christianity in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Oceania, and eastern Europe, as well as diasporic forms of non-Western Christianity emerging in contexts such as Western Europe and North America. World Christianity
World Christianity or global Christianity has been defined both as a term that attempts to convey the global nature of the Christian religion and an academic field of study that encompasses analysis of the histories, practices, and discourses of Christianity as a world religion and its various forms as they are found on the six continents. However, the term often focuses on "non-Western Christianity" which "comprises (usually the exotic) instances of Christian faith in 'the global South', in Asia, Africa, and Latin America." It also includes Indigenous or diasporic forms of Christianity in the Caribbean, South America, Western Europe, and North America. Jooseop Keum
Jooseop Keum (; born 1967) is a South Korean theologian and ecumenist, currently General Secretary of the Council for World Mission. Biography Keum received his BA in Christian Education and MDiv from Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary, and his MTh and PhD at the Centre for the Study of World Christianity, University of Edinburgh. His PhD, completed in 2003, was on "Remnants and renewal: A history of Protestant Christianity in North Korea, with special reference to issues of Church and State, 1945–1994." Asbury Theological Seminary
Asbury Theological Seminary is a Christian Wesleyan seminary in the historical Methodist tradition located in Wilmore, Kentucky. It is the largest seminary of the Wesleyan-Holiness movement. It is known for its advocacy of egalitarianism, giving equal status for men and women in ministerial roles and for ordination. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS). Timothy Tennent
Timothy C. Tennent (born September 24, 1959) is an American Methodist missiologist and expert on world Christianity. As of 2025, he is the Methodist Chair of Divinity at Beeson Divinity School where he oversees their Missions and World Christianity curriculum. He formerly served as President of Asbury Theological Seminary from 2009-2024. Prior to that he taught at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary from 1998-2009. He was first ordained and spent many years as a minister in the United Methodist Church. In 2023, he transferred his ministerial credentials to the Global Methodist Church. He is also a direct descendant of William Tennent, the founder of Log College, which was the precursor to Princeton University. The University of Jos, abbreviated as Unijos, is a federal university in Jos, Plateau State, central Nigeria. History What became the University of Jos was established in November 1971 from the satellite campus of the University of Ibadan. Regent College
Regent College is an interdenominational evangelical Christian College of Christian studies, and an affiliated college of the University of British Columbia, located next to the university's campus in the University Endowment Lands west of Vancouver, British Columbia. The Church of Nigeria is the Anglicanism, Anglican Church body, church in Nigeria. Esther Mombo
Esther Moraa Mombo is a Kenyan Anglican female theologian and a full professor of theology in the school of theology at St. Paul's University, Limuru. She researches church history with a focus on mission history, interfaith relations and theology, and gender studies with a focus on African women's theologies, sexuality, and HIV/AIDS. She is the founder of the Tamar campaign in Kenya which acknowledges gender-based violence in society and empowers churches to address it. Fourah Bay College is a public university in the neighbourhood of Mount Aureol in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Founded on 18 February 1827, it is the first western-style university built in Sub-Saharan Africa and, furthermore, the first university-level institution in Africa. Alexander Chow
Alexander Chow (simplified Chinese: 曹荣锦; traditional Chinese: 曹榮錦; pinyin: ''Cáo Róngjǐn'') is a Chinese American theologian. He is Senior Lecturer in Theology and World Christianity and co-director of Centre for the Study of World Christianity at New College, University of Edinburgh. His research interests include contextual theology, Christianity in China, Chinese philosophy and religion, public theology, and digital theology. Biography Born and raised in Southern California, he completed a MA in biblical studies and theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in 2006 and a MTh in theology at Regent College in 2008.
