Centrale Des Syndicats Du Québec
The Centrale des syndicats du Québec (CSQ; Quebec Labour Congress) is the third biggest trade union in Quebec, Canada, by membership. It was founded in 1946 when three earlier unions merged to form the ''Corporation générale des instituteurs et institutrices catholiques de la province de Québec'' (CIC; General Corporation of Catholic Teachers in the Province of Quebec). Léo Guindon was its first president. It changed its name in 1967 to ''Corporation des enseignants du Québec'' (Quebec teachers corporation), and then again in 1974 when it officially became a trade union, labour union to ''Centrale des enseignants du Québec'' (CEQ; Quebec teachers labour congress). It finally became the ''Centrale des syndicats du Québec'' in 2000 to acknowledge the fact that its membership base had expanded beyond teaching profession. Critics have argued that Cædmon is the author of the poem, but this theory has been since disproven. ''Daniel'', as it is preserved, is 764 lines long. The Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN; Confederation of National Trade Unions) is the second largest trade union federation in Quebec by membership. History It was founded in Hull, Quebec, Hull in 1921 as the ''Confédération des travailleurs catholiques du Canada'' (Catholic Workers Confederation of Canada). By 1927, by some estimates, up to a third of all union members in Quebec were members of the ''Confédération des travailleurs catholiques du Canada''. It became the CSN only in 1960 when it became secular. The CSN developed a close relationship with the Quebec Liberal Party and worked together to reform Québec's labor law in 1965 to extend collective bargaining to government employees. The Congress of Democratic Trade Unions ( French: ''Centrale des syndicats démocratiques'', CSD) is a national trade union centre in Quebec formed on 8 June 1972 in response to a split within the Confederation of National Trade Unions Confédération des syndicats nationaux, CSN). It is the smallest of the four labour centres in Quebec, with about 4% (62,770 members) of the union membership in the province. The split was led by dissident members of the CSN executive Paul-Émilien Dalpé, Jacques Dion and Amédée Daigle, referred to as the "Three Ds", who said they wanted a more democratic union body and one which would be politically neutral, as distinct from the political militancy of the CSN. John Wilson McConnell
John Wilson McConnell (July 1, 1877 – November 6, 1963) was a Canadian sugar refiner, newspaper publisher, humanitarian and philanthropist in Quebec, Canada. Early life J.W. McConnell was born to a farming family in the District Municipality of Muskoka, Muskoka region of Ontario. He left home as a boy of fourteen to find employment in the city of Toronto, Ontario. His first job paid $3 a week, but as an employee at Standard Chemical Co., he worked his way up to a management position that eventually led to a transfer to Montreal in 1901. The then 23-year-old lived for a time in a room at the Montreal YMCA, an institution that he would later thank through his volunteering to help lead a successful fund-raising campaign.
