Celt (tool)
In archaeology, a celt is a long, thin, prehistoric, stone or bronze tool similar to an adze, hoe, or axe. A shoe-last celt was a polished stone tool used during the early European Neolithic for felling trees and woodworking. Etymology The term "celt" seems to have come about from a copyist's error in many medieval manuscript copies of Job 19:24 in the Latin Vulgate Bible, which became enshrined in the authoritative Sixto-Clementine printed edition of 1592. Where all earlier versions (the Codex Amiatinus, for example) have ''vel certe'' (the Latin for 'but surely'), the Sixto-Clementine has ''vel celte''. The Hebrew has לעד (''lā‘aḏ'') at this point, which means 'forever'. The editors of the Oxford English Dictionary " nclineto the belief that ''celtis'' was a phantom word", simply a misspelling of ''certe''. California Extremely Large Telescope
The California Extremely Large Telescope (CELT) was a proposal for an extremely large telescope design first proposed in the 1990s by a consortium of Californian Universities. The design was for a segmented 30 m diameter astronomical telescope. The CELT had a positive reception and continued to be developed, and was renamed the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) around 2003–4. The CELT was one of the earlier and more successful proposals for extremely large telescopes. The optical design for CELT is a Ritchey-Chretien two-mirror system, with a segmented mirror mosaic with 1080 segments. This rather naturally provides a large, 20 arcminute field of view with less than 0.5 arcsecond images (100% enclosed energy). Cincinnati Celts
The Cincinnati Celts (pronounced with a hard C) was the first professional football team to play in Cincinnati, Ohio. The team played in the unofficial "Ohio League" and the American Professional Football Association (renamed the National Football League in 1922). The Celts were a traveling team, playing all of their APFA games in other cities' stadia. In its only season in the APFA, 1921, the team had a record of 1–3. For the entire span of the team's existence, the Celts were coached by Mel Doherty, who was also the team's center. Rattleback
A rattleback is a semi-ellipsoidal top which will rotate on its axis in a preferred direction. If spun in the opposite direction, it becomes unstable, "rattles" to a stop and reverses its spin to the preferred direction. For most rattlebacks the motion will happen when the rattleback is spun in one direction, but not when spun in the other. Some exceptional rattlebacks will reverse when spun in either direction. This counterintuitive behavior makes the rattleback a physical curiosity that has excited human imagination since prehistoric times. The modern Celts ( , see pronunciation of ''Celt'') are a related group of ethnicities who share similar Celtic languages, cultures and artistic histories, and who live in or descend from one of the regions on the western extremities of Europe populated by the Celts. A modern Celtic identity emerged in Western Europe following the identification of the native peoples of the Atlantic fringe as Celts by Edward Lhuyd in the 18th century. Lhuyd and others (notably the 17th century Breton chronologist Pezron) equated the Celts described by Greco-Roman writers with the pre-Roman peoples of France, Great Britain, and Ireland. They categorised the ancient Irish and British languages as Celtic languages. The descendants of these ancient languages are the Brittonic ( Breton, Cornish, and Welsh variants) and Goidelic ( Irish, Manx, and Gaelic variants) languages, and the people who speak them are considered modern Celts.
