Cathedral Of Saint Bonaventure, Banja Luka
The Cathedral of Saint Bonaventure in Banja Luka is one of four Roman Catholic cathedrals in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the seat of the Banja Luka Bishopric currently led by Bishop Franjo Komarica. The cathedral was built in honor of Saint Bonaventure, a Franciscan theologian from the Middle Ages. It was constructed by Alfred Pichler in the 1970s after the original had been damaged in an earthquake. The building suffered damage in the Bosnian War, but was reinaugurated in 2001 after the completion of repairs. Marijan Marković
Marijan Marković (October 20, 1840 – June 20, 1912) was Bosnian Croat Franciscan friar of the Franciscan Province of Bosna Srebrena, bishop and apostolic administrator of Banja Luka. Biography Marković was born at Dolac, near Travnik in Central Bosnia. In April 1856 he entered in Franciscan monastery in Fojnica and year later he became Franciscan friar. In Đakovo Marković studied and graduated in philosophy and theology. He was ordained a priest on April 26, 1863. Episcopal career On March 27, 1884 he was appointed apostolic administrator of Banja Luka and Titular Bishop of Danaba. He received his episcopal consecration from Serafino Vannutelli, in Vienna on May 4, 1884. One month later he came to Banja Luka and in July 1884 he ordered the construction of the cathedral and the bishop's palace. The Bosnian War ( sh, Rat u Bosni i Hercegovini / Рат у Босни и Херцеговини) was an international armed conflict that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995. The war is commonly seen as having started on 6 April 1992, following a number of earlier violent incidents. The war ended on 14 December 1995 when the Dayton accords were signed. Alfred Pichler
Alfred Pichler (18 December 1913 – 17 May 1992) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Banja Luka, the first bishop of Banja Luka who was diocesan priest and the first who was born on the territory of the Diocese of Banja Luka. Early life Alfred Pichler was born in Oštrelj near Drvar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to Anton and Matilda (née Helk) Pichler. He had finished elementary school in Šipovo and Prijedor where he also attended six years of gymnasium, then he went to the minor seminary in Travnik. He continued studying at the University of Catholic Theology in Sarajevo where he was ordained deacon by Ivan Šarić on 20 February 1937. Priesthood Pichler was ordained to the priesthood on 13 March 1937 in the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Sarajevo.
