Carnoy's Solution
Carnoy's solution is a fixative composed of 60% ethanol, 30% chloroform and 10% glacial acetic acid, 1 gram of ferric chloride. Carnoy's solution is also the name of a different fixation composed of ethanol and glacial acetic acid (3:1). Uses Some of the uses of Carnoy's solution are: *Enhancing lymph node detection during dissection of cadavers. *Immunohistochemical fixation and detection of NMDA receptors within the murine hippocampus. *Applied directly following enucleation for the treatment of odontogenic keratocysts. *Direct application following enucleation (Cuba) for certain kinds of unicystic ameloblastomas. This appears to decrease the likelihood of recurrence over enucleation alone. An odontogenic keratocyst is a rare and benign but locally aggressive developmental cyst. It most often affects the posterior mandible and most commonly presents in the third decade of life. Odontogenic keratocysts make up around 19% of jaw cysts. In the WHO/IARC classification of head and neck pathology, this clinical entity had been known for years as the odontogenic keratocyst; it was reclassified as keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) from 2005 to 2017. In 2017 it reverted to the earlier name, as the new WHO/IARC classification reclassified OKC back into the cystic category.
