Capaci Bombing
The Capaci bombing () was a terror attack by the Sicilian Mafia that took place on 23 May 1992 on Highway A29, close to the junction of Capaci, Sicily. It killed magistrate Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo, and three police escort agents, Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo and Antonio Montinaro; agents Paolo Capuzza, Angelo Corbo, Gaspare Bravo and Giuseppe Costanza survived. Autostrada A29 (Italy)
The Autostrada A29 or Autostrada del Sale ("Salt motorway") is an ''autostrade of Italy, autostrada'' (Italian language, Italian for "motorway") long in Italy on the island of Sicily that links Palermo to Mazara del Vallo. It is a part of the European route E90, E90 and European route E62, E933 European routes. The motorway is also called Autostrada del Sale ("Salt Motorway") because one of its branches ends at the salt pans between Marsala and Trapani. It's a four-lane motorway in its whole length. Autostrada A29 is entirely toll-free and is managed by ANAS. A segment of the motorway near Capaci was the site of Capaci bombing, the fatal bombing on Italian magistrate Giovanni Falcone and his wife Francesca Morvillo by the Sicilian Mafia. Maxi Trial
The Maxi Trial () was a criminal trial against the Sicilian Mafia that took place in Palermo, Sicily. The trial lasted from 10 February 1986 (the first day of the Corte d'Assise) to 30 January 1992 (the final day of the Supreme Court of Cassation (Italy), Supreme Court of Cassation), and was held in a bunker-style courthouse specially constructed for this purpose inside the walls of the Ucciardone prison. Sicilian prosecutors indicted 475 mafiosi for a multitude of crimes relating to Mafia activities, based primarily on the testimonies given by former Mafia bosses turned informants, known as ''pentito, pentiti'', in particular Tommaso Buscetta and Salvatore Contorno. Giuseppe Graviano (; 30 September 1963) is an Italian mafioso from the Brancaccio quarter in Palermo. He also was one of the men of the death squad that murdered Salvatore Contorno's relatives. Leoluca Bagarella (; born 3 February 1942) is an Italian criminal and member of the Sicilian Mafia. He is from the town of Corleone. Following his brother-in-law Salvatore Riina's arrest in early 1993, Bagarella became the head of the strategist strategy faction, opposing another faction commanded by the successor designate Bernardo Provenzano, creating a real rift in Cosa Nostra. Gioacchino La Barbera (born November 1959 in Altofonte) is a member of the Mafia who became a pentito. He was one of the key witnesses in the trial against the killers of Antimafia judge Giovanni Falcone. La Barbera was born in Altofonte, in the province of Palermo.
