Canoeing At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's K-1 1000 Metres
The men's K-1 1000 metres sprint canoeing event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 2 and 3 August 2021 at the Sea Forest Waterway. At least 15 canoeists from at least 15 nations competed. Background This was the 20th appearance of the event, one of four events to have appeared every Summer Games since the introduction of canoeing in 1936. The 2019 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, reigning World Champion is Bálint Kopasz of Hungary. The reigning Olympic champion is Marcus Walz of Spain, who will not defend his title; he is not among the 6 men's kayakers on Spain's team for 2020. Qualification A National Olympic Committee (NOC) could qualify one place in the event, though could enter up to 2 boats if it earned enough quota places through other women's kayak events. Sea Forest Waterway
The is a regatta venue for rowing (sport), rowing and canoeing, situated in Kōtō and Ōta, Tokyo, Ōta, Tokyo Bay, in Japan. History The venue was built for the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics, Paralympic Games. Construction began in 2016 and it was inaugurated in June 2019. It was built by Tokyo Metropolitan Government on the waterfront site and is the only rowing venue in Tokyo that meets international standards. The first international event that was held here were the 2019 World Rowing Junior Championships. Rowing at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Olympic rowing events are held from 23 to 30 July 2021. The hopes to be able to continue to maintain it after the Olympics. Simon McTavish (born July 19, 1996) is a Canadian male sprint kayaker. Born in Oakville, Ontario, Simon McTavish moved with his family to Sydney, Australia where he began paddling in 2011 at the age of 14. He represented Australia for 7 years from 2012 to 2018 on Olympic Hopes, Junior, U23 and Senior Teams. After successful international results in 2018, winning medals for Australia at the U23 World Championships and the FISU World University Games, the opportunity presented itself to return home to Canada and Simon jumped at it. In 2019, at the conclusion of his Project Management Degree at the University of Sydney, Simon moved back to Canada and secured his spot on the Canadian National Team in May at the Olympic Basin in Montreal, Canada, winning the k1 1000m and the k4 500m races. Thomas Anthony Green (born 3 June 1999) is an Australian sprint canoeist. He won a gold medal in the K2 1000 metres event at the 2020 Summer Olympics, competing alongside Jean van der Westhuyzen. He also competed in the K1 1000 metres in Tokyo, finishing in seventh place. In 2018, he won the K2 1000m with Joel McKitterick at the World Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and followed it up with wins in the 2019 Championships in Pitesti, Romania in the Under 23 K1 1000m and K4 500m events. Green was only 10 years old when he started kayaking at the Currumbin Creek Canoe Club. He was encouraged to concentrate on flat-water paddling. Jean van der Westhuyzen (born 9 December 1998) is an Australian sprint canoeist. He was educated at Michaelhouse, Balgowan, KwaZulu Natal. Career He won a gold medal in the K2 1000 metres event at the 2020 Summer Olympics as well as a bronze medal in the K2 500 metres event at the 2024 Summer Olympics, competing alongside Thomas Green. Jean also competed in the K1 1000 metres in Tokyo, finishing in 11th place by coming 3rd in the B-final.
