Canoeing At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's Slalom K-1
The men's K-1 slalom competition in canoeing at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place between August 11 and 12 2008 at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in Beijing. The K-1 (single kayak) event was raced by one-man kayaks through a whitewater course. There were three rounds of competitions: the heats, the semifinal, and the final. In the heats, each canoeist completed two runs of the course. The time, in seconds, of each run was added to the number of penalty points assessed. Touching any of the 21 slalom gates resulted in a 2-second penalty for each gate touched, while skipping any of the gates resulted in a 50-second penalty. The total times for the two preliminary runs were summed to give a score for the heats. The top 15 boats advanced to the semifinals. The semifinals consisted of a single run. Slalom Canoeing
Canoe slalom (previously known as whitewater slalom) is a competitive sport with the aim to navigate a decked canoe or kayak through a course of hanging downstream or upstream gates on river rapids in the fastest time possible. It is one of the two kayak and canoeing disciplines at the Summer Olympics, and is referred to by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as Canoe/Kayak Slalom. The other Olympic canoeing discipline is canoe sprint. Wildwater canoeing is a non-Olympic paddlesport. History Canoe slalom racing started in Switzerland in 1933, initially on a flatwater course. Helmut Oblinger
Helmut Oblinger (born 14 March 1973, in Schärding) is an Austrian slalom canoeist who competed from the early 1990s to 2015. He won a bronze medal in the K1 event at the 2003 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Augsburg. He also has four medals from the European Championships (1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronzes). Oblinger also competed at five Summer Olympics, earning his best finish of fourth in the K1 event in Sydney in 2000. Scott Parsons
Scott Parsons (born March 27, 1979, in Toledo, Ohio) is an American slalom canoeist who competed at the international level from 1994 to 2012. Competing in three Summer Olympics, he earned his best finish of sixth in the K1 event at Athens in 2004. He finished 20th in 2008 in Beijing. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, he represented the United States for the third time. He finished 16th in the K1 event after being eliminated in the heats. He qualified a US K1 slalom kayak for the 2012 Summer Olympics by finishing 15th at the 2011 World Championships, and then ensured his own qualification by finishing 11th at the 2012 Cardiff World Cup event on 9 June 2012. Atanas Nikolovski
Atanas Nikolovski (born 22 June 1980 in Skopje) is a Macedonian slalom canoer who has competed since the mid-1990s. In 2009, Atanas achieved 14th place in the world ranking race in Sydney, Australia. He came 1st in the semi finals, and 7th in the finals of the 2010 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. Kazuki Yazawa
is a Japanese slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2006. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, he was eliminated in the qualifying round of the K1 event finishing in 18th place. Four years later at the London games he was able to qualify for the final of the K1 event where he finished in 9th place.
