Canoeing At The 2024 Summer Olympics – Men's Slalom C-1
The men's Canoe slalom, C-1 slalom canoeing event at the 2024 Summer Olympics took place on 27 and 29 July 2024 at the National Olympic Nautical Stadium of Île-de-France in Vaires-sur-Marne. Benjamin Savšek was a 2020 Olympic champion, but he was placed eleventh. Background This will the 10th appearance of the event, having previously appeared in every Summer Olympics with slalom canoeing: 1972 and 1992–2020. Qualification Competition format Slalom canoeing uses a three-round format, with heats, semifinal, and final. In the heats, each canoeist has two runs at the course with the better time counting. The top 16 advance to the semifinal. In the semifinal, the canoeists get a single run; the top 12 advance to the final. The best time in the single-run final wins gold. The canoe course is approximately 250 metres long, with up to 25 gates that the canoeist must pass in the correct direction. Ander Elosegi Alkain (born 14 November 1987) is a Spanish-Basque slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2003. He won a three medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with two silvers (C1: 2019, C1 team: 2019) and a bronze (C1 team: 2009), all in La Seu d'Urgell. He also won two bronze medals at the European Championships. Elosegi participated in four Olympic Games. He finished fourth in the C1 event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and again in the same event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Daniel Watkins (canoeist)
Daniel Watkins (born 21 November 1995) is an Australian slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2011. He is from Grove, Tasmania. Daniel represented Australia in the C1 event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, after securing a quota place by winning the 2020 Oceania Canoe Slalom Championships. He qualified 2nd fastest for the final, finishing in 9th place. Early years Watkins grew up in Grove, Tasmania. He had plenty of time for recreation in this peaceful setting and started paddling in 2007 when he was 11 years of age. His technique was good and his parents decided that he should learn to canoe and paddle correctly. Watkins was enrolled in the Derwent Canoe Club beginners program. Takuya Haneda
is a Japanese male slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2002. He won a bronze medal in the C1 event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, becoming the first Asian canoeist to win an Olympic medal. He also won a gold medal in the C1 event at the 2014 Asian Games. Haneda participated in four Olympic Games. Lukáš Rohan (; born 30 May 1995) is a Czech slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2010. He is from Mělník, Czech Republic but lives and trains in Prague. Lukáš now competes solely in the C1 discipline, however he competed in the C2 discipline alongside Adam Svoboda and Martin Říha at different times between 2010 and 2015. Vojtěch Heger
Vojtěch Heger (born 23 August 2000) is a Czech slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2016. Heger competes in the C1 class and in kayak slalom, having initially competed in C2 alongside his older brother Tomáš and later with Antonie Galušková. Heger began paddling with KVS Hradec Králové in 2005, following his mother and brother into the sport. He moved to Brandýs nad Labem in 2015 and then to Prague, home of the Prague-Troja Canoeing Centre. He is currently studying physical education at Charles University. Matija Marinić
Matija Marinić (born 24 December 1990) is a Croatian slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2006. Matija competed in the C1 event at the 2020 Summer Olympics, finishing 11th. He is from Zagreb and is coached by 1992 Olympian Stjepan Perestegi. Personal life Matija married Tea Budimir, a physiotherapist, in 2016 and has a child named Marko. He is from Rijeka on the Kvarner Gulf and currently lives in Croatia's capital city, Zagreb. Liam Jegou (; born 9 January 1996) is an Irish slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2011. He is based in France but competes for Ireland. He competes in C1 individually and also competed in C2 with Cade Ryan from 2012 to 2014. Jegou was born in Pabu, Brittany to an Irish mother and a Breton father.
