Can-can
The can-can (also spelled cancan as in the original French /kɑ̃kɑ̃/) is a high-energy, physically demanding dance that became a popular music-hall dance in the 1840s, continuing in popularity in French cabaret to this day. Originally danced by couples, it is now traditionally associated with a chorus line of female dancers. The main features of the dance are the vigorous manipulation of skirts and petticoats, along with high kicks, splits, and cartwheels. History The can-can is believed to have evolved from the final figure in the quadrille, a social dance for four or more couples. Can Can (stylized as Can!!Can) is an American punk rock band from Atlanta, Georgia. They were formed in 2007 by lead vocalist Patrick Aleph, guitarist Mary Collins, and drummer Josh Lamar. They released their independent debut album, ''All Hell'', before signing to JDub Records, who released their next album, ''Monsters & Healers'', the following year. They are known for Aleph's aggressive vocals and philosophical, Jewish-themed lyrics. Biography Can Can was formed in 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia. Its members met through the local music scene: Lead singer Patrick Beaulier who performed as Patrick Aleph was in the Alive Records band The Love Drunks, guitarist Mary Collins performed as Trixie Riptide with the riot grrrl band The Moto-Litas, and drummer Josh Lamar toured with Nick Oliveri's band Mondo Generator. ''Can-Can'' is a Musical theatre, musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, and a book by Abe Burrows. The story concerns the showgirls of the Montmartre dance halls during the 1890s. The original Broadway theatre, Broadway production ran for over two years beginning in 1953, and the 1954 West End theatre, West End production was also a success. Gwen Verdon, in only her second Broadway role, and choreographer Michael Kidd won Tony Awards and were praised, but both the score and book received tepid reviews, and revivals generally have not fared well. ''Can-Can'' is a 1960 American musical film made by Suffolk-Cummings productions and distributed by 20th Century-Fox. It was directed by Walter Lang, produced by Jack Cummings and Saul Chaplin. The screenplay was written by Dorothy Kingsley and Charles Lederer, loosely based on the musical play by Abe Burrows. The music and lyrics were written by Cole Porter for the play, but for the film, some songs were replaced by those from earlier Porter musicals. Art direction was handled by Jack Martin Smith and Lyle R. Wheeler, costume design by Irene Sharaff and dance staging by Hermes Pan. The film was photographed in Todd-AO. Although performing well on initial release, it failed to recoup its production costs from its domestic receipts.
