Caimanera
Caimanera is a municipality and town in Guantánamo Province on the south eastern coast of Cuba. It is a fishing village and port built on the west shore of the sheltered Guantánamo Bay, just north of the US naval base and south of the provincial capital, Guantánamo. History The town was named for the caiman alligators which were once common in the river and in the mangrove labyrinths of the upper Bay, but which have since declined in numbers. The community of fishermen and salt mine workers flourished at the beginning of the 20th century precisely because of the base's construction. It was a magnet for Cuban workers and a popular spot for visitors, including Cubans from across the island and people from nearby countries such as Jamaica. Caimanera was liberated on December 19, 1958. On this anniversary the town usually has a parade and a political action. Guantánamo
Guantánamo (, , ) is a municipality and city in southeast Cuba and capital of Guantánamo Province. Guantánamo is served by the Caimanera port near the site of a U.S. naval base. The area produces sugarcane and cotton wool. These are traditional parts of the economy. History The city was founded in 1797 in the area of a farm named ''Santa Catalina''. The toponym "Guantánamo" means, in Taíno language, "land between the rivers". Geography The municipality is mountainous in the north, at Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, where it overlays the Sierra Maestra (mountains), and borders the Windward Passage of the Caribbean Sea in the south. It is crossed by the Bano, Guantánamo, Yateras, Guaso, San Andrés, and Sabanalamar rivers. The city is spread with a square plan and is crossed in the middle by the Carretera Central highway. Boquerón, Cuba
Boquerón is a Cuban village and ''consejo popular'' ("people's council", i.e. hamlet) of the municipality of Caimanera, in the Province of Guantánamo. Located near Guantánamo Bay, it is also known as Mártires de la Frontera, Spanish for "Martyrs of the Border". History The village was founded in 1903 and developed urbanistically since the 1970s. Geography Boquerón, located in the eastern shore of the bay, is the nearest Cuban settlement to the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Guantánamo Province
Guantánamo is the easternmost province of Cuba. Its capital is also called Guantánamo. Other towns include Baracoa. The province has the only land border of the U.S. Navy base at Guantánamo Bay. Havana Times
''Havana Times'' is a Cuban Digital Newspaper and online magazine founded in 2008. The online publication is edited in Nicaragua. Most of its contributors live in Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo. There are also Cuban contributors in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Canada, Ecuador and Mexico and volunteer translators in the Netherlands, the United States and the United Kingdom. Overview The project began as early as 2007, and the magazine was launched 2008 in Cuba, with Circles Robinson as editor. Robinson, a US native, moved to Cuba in 2001. He worked as a translator for ESTI, Cuba's official translation agency, but left Cuba after his work contract was not renewed in 2009, a fact that he associates with his role in ''Havana Times''.
