CKX-FM (96.1 MHz) is a radio station in Brandon, Manitoba. Owned by Bell Media, it broadcasts an adult hits format branded as '' Bounce 96.1''. History The station started operation on December 16, 1963 as a sister station to CKX-AM. The station, with a power of 29,000 watts, was the first stereo FM station in Manitoba. In 1983, the station adopted the ''KX 96'' and mainstream rock format, making 2008 their 25th year on air. As a mainstream rock station, KX 96 focused most of its airtime on classic rock or familiar music and features a somewhat limited collection of modern rock tracks. In 1991, Western Manitoba Broadcasters, who formerly owned CKX-FM, CKX-AM and CKX-TV, changed its name to Craig Broadcast Systems Inc. Craig's radio operations in Brandon were sold to Standard Radio in 2002, along with two other Craig Media properties. Brandon () is the second-largest city in the province of Manitoba, Canada. It is located in the southwestern corner of the province on the banks of the Assiniboine River, approximately west of the provincial capital, Winnipeg, and east of the Saskatchewan border. The Canadian Communications Foundation (CCF) was a Canadian nonprofit organization which documented the history of broadcasting in Canada, particularly radio and television networks, programs and broadcasters. The organization was established in 1967 and announced that it would begin wrapping up its work in 2023. Since 1995, the organization distributed its collection via its website. BOB FM is the on-air brand of a number of FM radio stations in the United States and formerly in Canada. The BOB FM format mostly concentrates on album rock, alternative rock and pop hits from the 1980s and 1990s, especially those popular during the early days of MTV when music videos made up most of MTV's schedule. However, BOB FM also features a smattering of oldies from the 1970s or earlier and classic hits from the 1990s or later. Astral Media Inc. was a Canadian media conglomerate. It was Canada's largest radio broadcaster, with 84 radio stations in eight provinces. Astral was also a major player in premium and specialty television in Canada, with 23 specialty channels and two conventional stations. In addition, Astral had a presence in out-of-home advertising. In March 2012, Bell Media announced its intent to acquire Astral for $3.38 billion. Although an attempt to purchase the entirety of the company was blocked under competition law, the CRTC approved a revised offer on June 27, 2013, which saw various Astral specialty channels and radio stations divested to competitors.
