Bandy is a winter sport and ball sport played by two team sport, teams wearing Ice skates#Bandy skates, ice skates on a large ice surface (either indoors or outdoors) while using sticks to direct a ball into the opposing team's goal. The playing surface, called a bandy field or bandy rink, is a sheet of ice which measures by , about the size of a football pitch. The field is considerably larger than the ice rinks commonly used for ice hockey. The sport has a common background with association football, ice hockey, shinty, and field hockey. Federation Of International Bandy
The Federation of International Bandy (FIB; , , ) is the international governing body for the sport of bandy, including the variant called rink bandy. The federation is headquartered in Karlstad Municipality, Sweden. History Bandy as known today has been played since the later half of the 19th century. Rules were set up in the 1890s by the National Bandy Association in England and by the corresponding body in Russia. The Ligue International de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG) was founded on 15 May 1908 at 34 Rue de Provence in Paris, France, at a time when bandy and ice hockey were seen as variants of the same game. The founders of the federation were representatives from Belgium, France, Great Britain, Switzerland and Bohemia (now Czech republic). Bandy Field
A bandy field or bandy rink is a large ice rink used for playing the team winter sport of bandy. Being about the size of a football pitch, it is substantially larger than an ice hockey rink. History Originally, bandy was played on naturally frozen ice, mainly on lakes. Teams often had to take time to go out and search for the best ice to use. Soon, ice started to be created on soccer pitches in the wintertime, allowing for a more safe place to play. This may be the reason the outer measurements are the same as for a soccer field. The first artificially frozen bandy field was created in Budapest, Hungary, in 1923. In the 1980s, indoor arenas started to be built, allowing for a longer season. Bandy Ball
A bandy ball is a rubber ball used for playing bandy and rink bandy. Bandy balls are manufactured by companies such as Jofa, Kosa, and Reebok. The core of the ball is made of cork and is surrounded by rubber or rubber-like plastic. Balls should be manufactured in a diameter of (the latter is called a "Russian ball"). Originally, bandy balls were red, then later became orange or cerise. According to the Bandy Playing Rules set up by the Federation of International Bandy, any of these are allowed, but all balls used in one game must be of the same colour and type. A similar ball is used in the sport of rinkball but the rinkball ball is blue in color rather than the orange or cerise color seen in both bandy and rink bandy. Bandy was originally played with a wooden ice hockey puck-like object, though balls were also used. Ice Rink
An ice rink (or ice skating rink) is a frozen body of water or an artificial sheet of ice where people can ice skate or play winter sports. Ice rinks are also used for exhibitions, contests and ice shows. The growth and increasing popularity of ice skating during the 1800s marked a rise in the deliberate construction of ice rinks in numerous areas of the world. The word "rink" is a word of Scottish origin meaning "course", used to describe the ice surface used in the sport of curling, but was kept in use once the winter team sport of ice hockey became established. Svenska Cupen (bandy)
Svenska Cupen (), ''Svenska Cupen i bandy'', is a Single-elimination tournament, knockout cup competition in Swedish bandy and the main bandy cup only open for domestic Swedish teams. The first year was 2005 Svenska cupen, 2005, and was won by Edsbyns IF. The first women's edition was played in 2019, and won by Västerås SK Dambandy, Västerås SK. Starting for the second year of the cup, a qualification round was made with matches played at different locations around Sweden in January. The real cup was then played at one location in the beginning of or mid-October. Since bandy is a winter sport with a season from autumn to spring, this meant that the qualification games were played in another season than the final cup was played, which could mean that a qualified club could come to the cup with a team consisting of many other players compared to the qualification round, as players are usually traded during the summer. Bandy At The 1952 Winter Olympics
Bandy was held as a demonstration sport at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo. A men's program was included but not a women's program. Sweden, Norway and Finland participated with their best players and won one match each. All three teams also lost a match apiece. Sweden won the tournament thanks to the best goal difference, with Norway second and Finland third. The three participating countries regularly played friendlies, but this was the first official international bandy tournament since 1913. Though bandy was played in the Soviet Union, they did not partake in the event because they did not compete in any international bandy competitions at that point.
