Athabasca University is a distance education university with open enrollment year round, accredited by the province and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. It has served more than 260,000 students since 1970. In 2007 it began offering some classes by cell phone, and in 2008 it became the first university in North America to offer a Doctorate in distance education. In 2009, it became the first Canadian university to offer a doctorate in Business Administration (DBA). The university teaches approximately 32,000 students per year, and has a variety of students with various learning needs. Classes are attended at the location of the student's choosing. Athabasca University
Athabasca University (AU) is a Canadian public university that primarily operates through online distance education. Founded in 1970, it is one of four comprehensive academic and research universities in Alberta, and was the first Canadian university to specialize in distance education. History In 1967, the Manning government announced its intention to establish a fourth public university, but this would be delayed by three years as the government considered different proposals. The U of A wanted to expand rather than see another university open in Edmonton to compete with it. One proposal favoured establishing a Christian university instead of a secular one. Another early suggestion was an "Alberta academy" that would take credits students had earned at multiple universities, evaluate them for transfer, and perhaps award degrees. Frank Pierpoint Appleby
Frank Pierpoint Appleby (December 23, 1913 – May 18, 2015) was a Canadian politician and Royal Air Force officer from Alberta. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1971 to 1986 as a member of the Progressive Conservative caucus. Early life Appleby was born in Stocks, Alberta to Ernest William Appleby (died ) and Fanny May Tench in 1913. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and attained the rank of Sergeant. Political career Appleby first ran for office in the 1944 Alberta general election for one of the three seats allocated to active servicemen in World War II. He finished fifth out of a field of seven candidates with 12% of the popular vote. He made another bid for a seat in the Alberta legislature twenty-seven years later, in the 1971 general election as the Progressive Conservative candidate in the electoral district of Athabasca. Larry Clarke
Larry Denman Clarke (June 12, 1925 – October 22, 2015) was a Canadian businessman and the founder, president, chief executive officer, and chairman of SPAR Aerospace Limited, the designer of the Canadarm. He is a founding Director of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and from 1987 to 1991, was the Chancellor of York University. Biography Clarke was born in London to Edward Denman Clarke and Audrey Rant in 1925 and moved to Canada in 1939 after attending Eton College. After graduating from Trinity College School and serving as a Technician in the Royal Canadian Navy during the second world war, he earned a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1949. He later worked in the Canadian Department of Defense and at de Havilland Aircraft before founding SPAR Aerospace and leading its acquisition from de Havilland in 1967. Boston Bruins
The Boston Bruins are a professional ice hockey team based in Boston. The Bruins compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Atlantic Division (NHL), Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference. The team has been in existence since 1924–25 NHL season, 1924, making them the National Hockey League all-time results, third-oldest active team in the NHL, and the oldest in the United States. Halton (federal Electoral District)
Halton was a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1988 before being abolished in an electoral district redistribution, and again from 1997 to 2015, when it was again abolished in another electoral district redistribution. When it was last contested in 2011, its population was 203,437, of whom 115,255 were eligible electors. Gary Carr (politician)
Gary Carr (born August 14, 1955) is a Canadian politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1990 to 2003, and served in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal from 2004 to early 2006. Gary Carr is currently the Chair of the Regional Municipality of Halton. Background Carr has a certificate in Business Administration from Ryerson University, and was a businessman and sales manager in the transportation industry before entering public life. He continued his education as a politician, and received an MBA from Athabasca University in 2002. Edmonton Ellerslie
Edmonton-Ellerslie is a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada. It is mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly. History The 2010 boundary redistribution saw the riding shrink on its north boundary to Anthony Henday Drive from roughly 34 Avenue, losing some land to Edmonton-Mill Woods and Edmonton-Mill Creek. Boundary history Electoral history The electoral district was created in 1993 from Edmonton-Mill Woods. The first election held that year saw incumbent NDP MLA Gerry Gibeault switch from that district to run in Ellerslie. A wave of support for the Alberta Liberals rolled across Edmonton causing Liberal candidate Debby Carlson to win the riding with over half the popular vote. Debby Carlson
Debby Carlson (born April 5, 1957) is a former Liberal MLA in Alberta, who represented the electoral district of Edmonton Ellerslie from 1993 to 2004. Carlson won her seat in southeast Edmonton's Ellerslie area, and held it in the 1993, 1997, and 2001 elections until 2004 when she won a highly contested federal Liberal Party nomination in the Edmonton Strathcona riding. In 2004, Carlson was unsuccessful in her campaign against Conservative incumbent Rahim Jaffer, where she placed second. She was Deputy Leader of the Opposition and was once a star player in the Alberta Liberal Party, but then took a position as environmental critic. The New York Islanders (colloquially known as the Isles) are a professional ice hockey team based in Elmont, New York. Paul Boutilier
Paul André Boutilier (born May 3, 1963) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played with several National Hockey League teams in the 1980s. He was a member of the 1983 Stanley Cup champion New York Islanders. Playing career Boutilier was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He starred in the QMJHL with the Sherbrooke Castors in the early 1980s. In 1982, he helped the team reach the Memorial Cup finals, however, his team lost to the Kitchener Rangers. He was named to the tournament all-star team, and was voted a first-team all-star by the QMJHL.
