Archipsocidae is a family of barklice of the order Psocodea (formerly Psocoptera) belonging to the suborder Psocomorpha. Members of the family are characterized by their reduced wing venation. Archipsocus
''Archipsocus'' is a genus of bark lice in the insect family Archipsocidae. Members of this genus are found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world and were first reported in North America in 1934 when '' Archipsocus nomas '' became abundant near New Orleans. Psocids in the genus ''Archipsocus'' differ from each other on minute particulars and there is not a single feature that can be used to diagnose all the species. Some characteristics that may be useful include the length of the different segments of the antennae and the shape of the phallic frame. Taxonomy Some species that used to be included in this genus and which give birth by parthenogenesis to live young, have now been separated into the genus '' Archipsocopsis''. Archipsocus Nomas
''Archipsocus nomas'' is a web-spinning barklouse, a psocid in the insect family Archipsocidae. It is found in the southeast of the United States, living gregariously on trees, feeding on lichen and fungi and spinning a web that adheres to the trunk and large branches in sheets. The webs are thought to protect the barklice from predators and neither the insects nor the webs cause damage to the trees. Distribution This barklouse is found near the Atlantic coast of the United States southwards from South Carolina and along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas. Description Both adults and nymphs of ''A. nomas'' are soft-bodied insects resembling aphids, with long narrow antennae. The mandibles are designed for chewing and the central part of the maxilla is modified into a slender rod which is used to brace the psocid while it grinds away with its mandibles. Psocodea
Psocodea is a taxonomic group of insects comprising the bark lice, book lice and parasitic lice. It was formerly considered a superorder, but is now generally considered by entomologists as an order. Despite the greatly differing appearance of parasitic lice (Phthiraptera), they are believed to have evolved from within the former order Psocoptera, which contained the bark lice and book lice, now found to be paraphyletic. They are often regarded as the most primitive of the hemipteroids. Psocodea contains around 11,000 species, divided among four suborders and more than 70 families. They range in size from 1–10 millimetres (0.04–0.4 in) in length. The species known as booklice received their common name because they are commonly found amongst old books—they feed upon the paste used in binding. Psocoptera () are a paraphyletic group of insects that are commonly known as booklice, barklice or barkflies. The name Psocoptera has been replaced with Psocodea in recent literature, with the inclusion of the former order Phthiraptera into Psocodea (as part of the suborder Troctomorpha). They are often regarded as the most primitive of the paraneopterans. There are more than 5,500 species in 41 families in three suborders. Many of these species have only been described in the early twenty-first century. They range in size from in length.
