Al-Merrikh Sporting Club () is a Sudanese professional football club based in the city of Omdurman. Their home stadium is Al-Merrikh Stadium, which is locally known as The Red Castle. Founded in 1908, Al-Merrikh is one of the oldest football clubs in Africa. The club competes in the Sudan Premier League, however they currently play in the Super D1, the top flight of Mauritania due to the Sudanese civil war. Club history Al-Merrikh was founded under the name of Al-Masalma Sporting Club in 1908 by students from Al-Masalmah district that was headed by their chairman Jek Deng Aban Gorang in Omdurman of Gordon Memorial College. The club renamed as Al-Merrikh Sporting Club on 14 November 1927. Rivalries The club has a fierce rivalry with Al-Hilal with the games between them regularly selling out, as well as being the only other realistic challenger to the league crown. Al-Merrikh Stadium
Al-Merrikh Stadium, also known as the Red Castle, is a multi-use stadium in Omdurman, Sudan, used mostly for football matches and also sometimes for athletics. Established in 1962. The stadium is used mostly for football (soccer), football games and is considered the home stadium of both Al-Merrikh SC and the Sudan national football team, Sudan national team. Currently, the stadium has a capacity of 43,000. In the 2018 CAF Champions League season, Al-Merrikh drew an average home attendance of 37,250. They usually draw much lower crowds for their domestic league games. Overview The stadium officially opened on November 30, 1964. It had first opened in 1962 while still under construction to host a meeting between Al-Hilal Club (Omdurman), Al-Hilal Club and Al-Mourada SC for a national holiday in November 1962.
