Akira Toriyama
was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He came to be regarded as one of the most influential and important authors in the history of manga, authoring highly influential and popular series, particularly Dragon Ball (manga), ''Dragon Ball''. Toriyama first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the manga series ''Dr. Slump'', for which he earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best ''shōnen manga, shōnen''/''shōjo''. Dr. Slump went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into an anime, with a second series created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. Kiyosu (town)
was a town located in Nishikasugai District, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 19,409 and a density of 3,696.95 persons per km2. The total area was 5.25 km2. On July 7, 2005, Kiyosu absorbed the towns of Nishibiwajima and Shinkawa (all from Nishikasugai District) to create the city of Kiyosu. The Harvey Awards are given for achievement in comic books. Named for writer-artist Harvey Kurtzman, the Harvey Awards were founded by Gary Groth in 1988, president of the publisher Fantagraphics, to be a successor to the Kirby Awards, which were discontinued in 1987.
