2025 In Spaceflight
Spaceflight in 2025 promises to follow the 2020s trend of record-breaking orbital launches (with at least 300 expected) and increased developments in lunar, Mars, and low-earth orbit exploration. Spaceflight in 2025 will include more private companies' launches, and reusable launch vehicles will be used. Private robotic landers, part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services, CLPS Program have touched down with more to land as part of the Artemis program. Overview Astronomy and astrophysics Exploration of the Solar System AstroForge#Odin (Brokkr-2), AstroForge's Brokkr-2 was launched on 27 February 2025 to perform a flyby of a near-Earth asteroid and determine if the asteroid is metallic. This is a timeline of known spaceflights, both crewed and uncrewed, sorted chronologically by launch date. Due to its large size, the timeline has been split into smaller articles, one for each year since 1951. There is a separate list for all flights that occurred before 1951. The list for the year and for its subsequent years may contain planned launches, but the statistics will only include past launches. Hakuto-R Mission 2, also called ''Resilience'', was a robotic Moon landing , lunar landing mission launched on 15 January 2025. Developed by the Japanese company Ispace (Japanese company), ispace, the lander was intended to deliver a small Rover (space exploration), rover manufactured by the company's European subsidiary, as well as other payloads. Like Hakuto-R Mission 1, this mission served as a technology demonstration, with the final goal of providing reliable transportation and data services on the Moon. Blue Ghost Mission 1 was a robotic Moon landing mission by Firefly Aerospace that launched on January 15, 2025, and successfully Soft landing, soft-landed on the lunar surface on March 2, 2025, at 08:34Coordinated Universal Time, UTC. Active asteroids are Small Solar System body, small Solar System bodies that have asteroid-like orbits but show comet-like visual characteristics. That is, they show a Coma (cometary), coma, comet tail, tail, or other visual evidence of mass-loss (like a comet), but their orbits remain within Jupiter's orbit (like an asteroid). These bodies were originally designated main-belt comets (MBCs) in 2006 by astronomers David Jewitt and Henry Hsieh (astronomer), Henry Hsieh, but this name implies they are necessarily icy in composition like a comet and that they only exist within the asteroid belt, main-belt, whereas the growing population of active asteroids shows that this is not always the case. ''Tianwen-2'' () is a Chinese asteroid sample return and comet exploration mission that launched on 28 May 2025. China National Space Agency (CNSA) plans for the probe to return samples from asteroid 469219 Kamoʻoalewa in 2027. After the mothership drops off the sample return vessel to Earth, it is planned that it will then rendezvous with main-belt comet 311P/PANSTARRS and explore it with its 11 onboard instruments.
