Zimbabwe National Army
The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) is the primary branch of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces responsible for land-oriented military operations. It is the largest service branch under the Zimbabwean Joint Operations Command (JOC). The modern army has its roots in the Rhodesian Army, which was raised between 1963 and 1964 after the breakup of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Edzai Absolom Chimonyo
Lieutenant General Edzai Absolom Chakanyuka Chimonyo (November 7, 1952July 8, 2021) was a Zimbabwean military officer and Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army from December 2017 to July 2021. Career On December 18, 2017, Major General Edzai Chimonyo was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and was also appointed Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army. Ahmed Bilal Shah
Ahmed Bilal Shah (died 25 June 2021) was a Pakistani-Zimbabwean medical practitioner and television personality who was a presenter on ZBC TV. Career and background Ahmed Bilal Shah was born in Pakistan. He relocated to Zimbabwe in 1982 then started his medical practice in 1987 working at Parirenyatwa Hospital. He then proceeded to work in high density suburbs of Harare and he was the first foreign doctor to work in the country's high density areas. During that period, Shah went to schools to deliver lectures on good health practices. In early 90s, Shah met one of Zimbabwe's television journalists, Reuben Barwe, who organised his first ZBC TV interview on health issues. From then, an idea for his own TV show emerged. Shah launched ''You and Your Health'' programme on ZBC TV that aired from 1992 to 2007. Janice McLaughlin
Janice McLaughlin (February 13, 1942 – March 7, 2021) was an American Catholic nun, missionary, and human rights activist. While working as the press secretary for the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in the 1970s, she was imprisoned by the white minority government in Rhodesia for exposing atrocities and human rights violations committed against the country's black citizens. She was placed in solitary confinement and, after intervention from the Vatican and the United States federal government, she was deported to the United States. She returned two years later to the newly established country of Zimbabwe to create an educational system, at the request of Prime Minister Robert Mugabe. In her later years she served as the president of the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic in New York and worked as an anti-human trafficking activist. Zimdancehall
Zimdancehall is a subgenre of reggae and dancehall music from Zimbabwe. The traditional way of message delivery is through chanting. Zimdancehall became more popular after the fall of the Urban Grooves genre. Popular pioneers of Zimdancehall include Winky D, Decibel, Sniper Storm, Bootkin Clan, Daddie Distress, Ras Tavonga (Jah Bless), Freeman HKD, and Lewaz Skattah. History Zimdancehall started in the late 1980s with the rising up of local sound systems. The popularity of these recordings led to more studio recordings. By the end of the 1990s, a number of local youths were recording singles and albums independently and reggae bands like Cruxial Mix ( Trevor Hall) and Black Roots holding regular weekly shows to showcase artists. Soul Muzavazi Musaka, known professionally as Soul Jah Love or Chibaba (22 November 1989 – 16 February 2021), was a Zimbabwean musician credited as a pioneer of mainstream Zimdancehall. David Katzenstein (January 3, 1952 – January 25, 2021) was an American virologist and prominent AIDS researcher. He was professor emeritus of infectious diseases and global health at Stanford University. Early life and education Katzenstein was born in Hartford, Connecticut. Paradzai Zimondi
Paradzai Willings Zimondi (Paradzai Willings Zimonte) (4 March 1947 – 22 January 2021) was a Zimbabwe military junta and Prison Director. Zimondi was considered a hero of the Zimbabwean struggle for independence, and he later attained the rank of major general in the Zimbabwean army. Joel Biggie Matiza (17 August 1960 – 22 January 2021) was a Zimbabwean politician and the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development since 2018. He died from COVID-19 on 22 January 2021.
