The year was declared as a major political year, as Indonesia held the 2019 Indonesian general election, in which Indonesians would choose whether to re-elect President Joko Widodo or to elect a new president. Subsequently, President Joko Widodo was re-elected as the 7th President of Indonesia, with his new vice president, Ma'ruf Amin. Indonesians also elected another hundreds of members of People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), and members of local legislative bodies, making it one of the largest single-day election in the world. The year was also marked by protests and riots, led by government opposition and Indonesian students. 2019 Indonesian General Election
General elections were held in Indonesia on 17 April 2019. For the first time in the country's history, the President of Indonesia, president, the Vice President of Indonesia, vice president, members of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), and members of local legislative bodies were elected on the same day with over 190 million eligible voters. Sixteen parties participated in the elections nationally, including four new parties. Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi (born 27 November 1962) is an Indonesian diplomat who formerly served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet of Joko Widodo between 2014 and 2024.
